I gave you an idea, eh? [:D]

Anyhoo, I really have only seen a couple of Mae's films, and my memory is dim. I dig Marlena, though.

'Too much of a good thing is wonderful'
'Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?'
'Don't let a man put anything over on you except an umbrella.'
'Sex is an emotion in motion'.
Of Cary Grant being 6'6":  'Let's forget about the six feet and concentrate on the six inches'.

slvebtchdeCarlos -> RE: Mae West (3/15/2008 10:01:53 PM)

Cary Grant slaps cuffs on her. MW: "Those absolutely necessary? You know, I wasn't born with them." Grant: "All those men would have been a lot safer if you had." MW: "I don't know . . . hands ain't everything."(from - She Done Him Wrong)
Man: "I'll look after the cattle and the men for you." Cleo: "Just the cattle ... I'll take care of the men."(from - Goin' To Town)

Man: "You're the kind of woman I've dreamed about ... always desired. I'm wild about you." Ruby: "Some of the wildest men make the best pets."(from - Belle of the Nineties)

Gwynvyd -> RE: Mae West (3/15/2008 10:16:44 PM)

*chuckles*

I think she is one of the few true on screen seductress

Watching all of these clips on You Tube has reminded me of what my Mimi said. People do not "flirt" any more.

Where has the flirtatious Wink gone? no one winks any more.. * well except me.. I wink!*

People simply do not know what to do when you wink at them... LOL

She showed that a woman could have many suitors and be seductive, flirtatious, and smart. Of course most of her movies showed her as a gold digger... but it always had a funny element to it that back fired on her.

You play with fire and you are bound to be burned by it.

She also had The Great Duke Ellington in someof her films. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEeIk-f60ac

Her with Rock Hudson....  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZUVP_nsRjw

Too many gems to list!
But I can share a story.  My maternal grandmother was the same age and grew up in the same Brooklyn neighborhood as Mae.  She and her friends were not allowed to run with Mae as she was a "very fast girl".  [;)]  Her antics began long before her Hollywood days and her roles were exactly who she was.  Typecasting at its best!

MadameMarque -> RE: Mae West (3/15/2008 10:37:07 PM)

Oh my God, Gwyn!  You are fabulous.

Mae rules.  What, three generations later? and still, can you think of any other woman who, in her public and onscreen persona, has claimed her sexuality, her self-determination, her pleasure, like that?

And she created that character.  She wrote or co-wrote her screenplays.  She even taught Edith Head, the famous costume designer, how to dress her for sensuality.  As GoddessDusty says, she was that woman!

"Anything worth doing is worth doing slowly."
- Mae West

that rocks that your grandma knew her...

Great story!

I found the clip of her being on Mr. Ed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3fKmid_i3w  too cute.

Gwynvyd -> RE: Mae West (3/15/2008 10:44:30 PM)

there never has been a woman claim it like her.

She wrote all of her own screen plays everything... totaly self made in that way.

She was a damn strong woman. Strong and sensual as hell.

She proved there was nothing wrong with being sexy.

*big smiles*

We need more women like that.

There are many great Mae West screen moments with W.C. Fields.
Classic never to be duplicated exchanges of one-ups-manship and innuendo.

I am reminded of a  Mae West moment  I had the occasion to quote
recently.  It is one of my favorites.

She enters an old fashioned nightclub by coming down an amazing staircase.
at the bottom is what was called a "hatcheck girl".  A woman who took
coats and hats and hung them up for the patrons.

As Mae is giving the woman her fur the woman notices an outrageous
diamond ring on her finger and exclaims in surprise: "OH, My goodness!"

Mae looks at her like an innocent child and as she turns away laughs
slightly and says: "Goodness,  had nothing to do with it honey"

Perfect.

Mercnbeth -> RE: Mae West (3/16/2008 9:22:13 AM)

"I like gowns that are tight enough to show I am a woman and loose enough to show I'm a lady"

"You can bet clothes make the woman--and there wasn't enough to those skimpy things the girls have been wearing to do 'em much good!  I don't see why there can't be modified versions of Lady Lou's costumes, especially for the evening.  They won't kill the girl of 1933 any more than they did the 1890 belle.  She ought to be able to carry them as well as her mother did.  Oh, I don't mean to go back into all that tight corseting.  Heaven knows, I don't blame women to fight stays.  But the big hats, the voluminous furs, the wide spreading skirts and the curves--if you think they don't make a woman attractive, just ask any man."

quotes from Mae West
from the book "Dressed, A Century of Hollywood Costume Design" by Deborah Nadoolman Landis, page 77, 89-90

And my favorite quote:
"My left leg is Christmas and my right leg is New Year - Cum up and see me between the holidays."
