It can mean many things from simply , a group of people that are poly on some levels, to close friends in the lifestyle who think of each other as family.

"Leather family" usually refers to your chosen family in the leather community. With a chosen family, the bonds can be MUCH deeper than with a born family. Master Skip Chasey often says: Blood is thicker than water, but leather is thicker than blood.

The term was actually coined by Guy Baldwin in his speach accepting International Mr Leather 1989.

"There is a reason my family does not know me and does not particularly want to know me any better than they do, and that is that I am very different from them. I am a leatherman and they know it. Fortunately, I have another family, a much larger family of people who know, love, trust and respect me -- my leather family. It is my most sincere wish that each of you will create for yourselves just such a supplemental family, because in these times when we are under attack from so many directions, we all need the support that can only come from such a family..."
-Guy Baldwin, International Mr. Leather Contest Speech 1989

"leather" has no meaning to me other than something my belt and shoes are made from.  But to those who call their friends, relationships, and lifestyle that, more power to you!

And there can be poly families/clans/groups that are into bdsm and kink but NOT consider themselves "leather."

I'm not a "leather person."
