The whole problem is that once you do drink a good wine, you can't really go back to crap stuff, I wish my palate would be a lot less "educated" or spoiled, it would be a good deal cheaper and I don't even drink a lot...

I'm quite fussy when it comes to wines, though I have to say (and that is despite being Italian) I have to yet meet a temperanillo grape that ever disappointed, reds should have to be definitely full bodied!

I pretty much only drink white wine. I like Pinot Grigio from Italy or California.....A good Pinot Noir is the only other type I might drink that isn't white.

I like to drink Sangria, especially with fresh fruits.  It is the only wine that I actually enjoy the taste of.  Well, that I can afford anyway.

We recently had an amazing white Cote du Rhone, it was just heavenly...

Condrieu (viognier), or a white Hermitage? Or was it something along the lines of La Vielle Ferme?

Quarts du Chaume (Loire Valley) is amazing... had a Canadian Gewürtztraminer Icewine a few years back that impressed the hell out of me.

Best chardonnay (non-Chablis) was a 96 Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet "Les Chenovettes". Look on the map at how close that vineyard is to Le Montrachet.

Martinelli "Guiseppe & Luisa" Zinfandel, Russian River Valley, is always stunning.

I haven't had any wine in over a year. I'm exploring US microbreweries.

Ahhh Hippie, your tastes run much more to the more sweeter side of things than mine

@ Zeph

Prosecco is an Italian dry foam wine (slightly lighter than champagne and a bit less pungent), Aperol is a bitter similar to Campari, the mix is just amazing, very refreshing and tasty... LOL, well I guess you have to book a plane ticket and then as a good hostess I would have to take you to Italy (oh the hardship)

This last Thanksgiving, I made a large all fresh fruits salad and for dinner I served Sangria.  Most of the fruit went into the wine glasses.  It was a big hit, but I didn't plan it that way.  In fact, I was surprised at how popular the fruit salad was that year, and happy thinking everyone was eating healthier or something LOL - silly me.  Even people who didn't normally drink wine were drinking it.  I've already had a request for it this next year.

That sounds really refreshing LadyC and since it'll be a while before I'll have the cash to travel it looks like I'm going to have to make myself.

WinD that's really interesting, I've never put fresh fruit in sangria before. That goes on the list as well.

Not really. I just appreciate stickies. Used to be a custom to have a Beerenauslese on Thanksgiving. But other than that, they were only occasionally drunk.

I used to have about 50 cases in the cellar, most of which were dry.

Ahhh I think I am a bit sick now, Beerenauslese is errr well, like liquid gummibears or something, utterly horrible, I can't stand sweet wines, even a Spätlese (grapes once frozen over while being on the vine, increases the sugar content) is utterly horrible. I actually gag if somebody next to me has a Red Bull with anything, it's just vile and the smell alone is puke inducing, but I have been called a perv before because I don't like chocs and most sweet things apart from fresh fruit, just doesn't taste remotely right to me.

I'm like you and it drives the Mister crazy.  I just can't drink crap wine.  He says I'm a wine snob, I say "hardly!"

That said, my favorite white that I've enjoyed is Far Niente and my favorite red I've enjoyed is Opus One.

However, those aren't in my regular rotation.

Like you, I've never had a Tempranillo I didn't like.  For every day stuff, I'll do Napa Cellars Chardonnay, and there's a great red table wine called Apothic Red that I get a lot.

I don't like the sweet stuff, either.

I prefer Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio to Chardonnays. Not a fan of heavily oaky wines.

My fav red is a Sangiovese.

And although I'm in the Hudson Valley, I prefer Finger Lake wines, especially Bully Hill Vineyard.

Why would a wine be dry or sweet? What possibly makes them sweet?

Absolutely, we're not wine snobs, we just know what we like. I have no problem drinking a 2 or 3 Euro supermarket bottle of wine in France or in Italy, it's not about the price tag, it's simply about the quality of the wine.
