I always thought they were much the same thing, but I am unaware of the distinction KoM might be making, and also the context in which the terms are being used by many (which I thinnk might matter).

Personally, I've never really differentiated them much, but that's me. I always thought they were much the same thing, akin to what cloudboy posted from the dictionary. [:)] All due respect to everyone here intended.

Uhh, I did.  I said this:

quote:

Envy is when you want something that someone else has, and sometimes it can even be a healthy emotion (for example, "I envy your adventurousness").  But usually it's a negative emotion, borne out of a desire to get even or to humble someone who has something you don't.

Did you catch that?  USUALLY it's a negative emotion.  You're the one who got all bent out of shape when I dared to suggest that envy might sometimes be healthy.

Oh, and as I've been trying to explain to you--unsuccessfully, obviously--statements like "I'm jealous of your trip to Cancun" are imprecise.  What you really mean is something like "I'm envious of your trip to Cancun."

There's a fluffy meaning of jealously too --- but I would call that casual usuage --- "I'm jealous of your trip to Cancun."

But KoM is not talking about or raising an issue of either the casual meaning of jealousy or envy --- he's talking about their primary meanings (not 4 and 4b) and I suggest we concentrate on them.

Some of the more negative emotions are Jealousy and Envy.  I see them as two seperate and distinct emotions.  But, I am wondering how others see them?

Knight, I see them in the same light. But the lines are so very grey. When one seems to desire another, and yet a rival succeeds in obtaining their attention, I see it as a combination of the two. There can be seperate and distinct levels, but there can also be a blending of the two emotions.

I'm still trying go figure out why this thing would have been brought back up after one month's absence.

Yes I got bent out of shape. I know a few envious people and to me they have a diseased mindset. They're truly never happy for anyone else and they always feel as if the world and others are passing them by --- when in fact their lives are pretty good and would be improved if they simply had a more postitive attitude. Envy can be a more generalized mindset and way of thinking, not just a particular feeling over something specific, and this is why I see it as particularly awful.

Pride Envy Gluttony Lust Anger Greed Sloth

As you see, Jealously isn't one of the seven deadly sins.

You are right. I have basically overreacted here. When I think about how difficult it is to get along with an envious person, I get upset when I perceive people downplaying it.

I do not wish to draw my sword or pitch my Random House Dictionary against you and the Oxford Multi-volume dictionary. I concede you have a grip on the subject at hand and disclose that I was being somewhat provocative too.

Word fights can be pretty fun and they train everyone to think more critically. The benefits outweigh the harm.

IMO, Bitatruble still underestimates the importantance of fairness in BDSM relationships, but I'll let that sleeping dog lie.

cloudboy, you are an angel-person, really. I've always wanted to ask you this - are you a professional writer? Because some (most) of your posts are so well-written and detailed that they are indeed a distinct pleasure to read. Here, there, on the Off-topic discussion forum, lots of places. Even if you are not a professional, you really are a great writer (I think). There are other people here whose writing stands out, and I noticed right away yours is (I think) very descriptive, hardly ever any wasted words, creative, and yet also to the point.

As far as the seven deadly sins go, I am not sure which is my least favorite.
But -Greed sounds like just too much work to me, frankly, hehe. I will admit that Envy isn't pretty either.
