MercTech..............when I was in the Brit Merchant Navy, we used to carry a really good Caribbean rum to the west coast of the states. It was called Hudson Bay and was powerful stuff. A lot of it used to get mislaid from the cargo and put down as 'smashed due to inclement weather'.................Do you know if you can still get it ? The rums that are made in this country are disgusting and taste very like the cough mixture my father used to take for bronchitis.

On the rare occasions I drink anything I am a Crown Royal fan. Not mixed, shots. That is the extent of my whiskey knowledge.

I live in an area that swears by Jack Daniels Bourbon. Frankly, to me, Jack Daniels tastes like there is a charcoal briquet in the glass. A good whiskey deserves to be savored neat.

Sounds like you're drinking Old No. 7.

Try Gentleman Jack. And absolutely yes, neat. Even an ice cube is blasphemy.

I'd recommend you have a pop at Black Bushmills.

I was given a bottle of Bushmills 1608 a while back, and it's lovely too.

I'm a Glengoyne fan. A Scottish single malt that is smooth, and has an after taste of caramel. Very nice with a really good coffee on the side.

Glenmorangie here, altho I havent tasted it for a few years.
Only single malt scotch for me, my dad was a bit of a whisky freak, it got passed on.
He did instill the rule that the only thing that should be added to a shot of single malt, is another shot of the same. No ice, no water, no mix.. I can only drink it straight.

Legally, Jack Daniels cannot be called Bourbon...because of the charcoal filtering process...although, in reality, it is a bourbon-type whiskey.

I was always taught that anything not distilled in Kentucky wasn't a Bourbon (Sorry, Jack Daniels). When I was older, I found out that there's a dispute between Kentucky and Louisiana as far as which place can "claim" Bourbon.

Either way, Old No. 7 isn't Bourbon.

when my ex, and I split up there was a £35 bottle of single malt that 'we' had bought together. by that I mean he chose it, I wasn't that thrilled with it, and actually wanted a different one, but I ended up paying for it anyway. he, however, thought it was wonderful, so I took great pleasure in putting it in angel delight, coffee, over ice-cream, in cakes, and anything that would have made him scream lol I used 3/4 of a bottle doing that [:D]

I'm with Lucylastic though in general, it has to be single malt, and you do not add anything to it. my son on the other hand is a JD lover, and drinks it with coke. I've tried to like it, but I just can't. I've even tried the honey one too. it was rather like a cock; nice while it was in my mouth, but the after taste let it down.

Have your tried cock with honey? May radically improve your experience.

Jus sayin

mnottertail -> RE: Favourite Whisky? (4/23/2015 9:32:15 AM)

Bourbon needs to be made in America from at least 51% corn, whiskey does not. All bourbons are whiskey, but not all whiskies are bourbon.

Or a cognac-cock-and coke?

needlesandpins -> RE: Favourite Whisky? (4/25/2015 4:06:13 AM)

I've had cock with chilli. it wasn't intentional, but added an interesting twist [:D] Champagne was intentional, and that was nice. Deep throat was tried to see if that would help, but I gotta tell you guys, your stuff is damn persistent on letting you know it's been in your mouth lol

Drambuie is a sweet, golden coloured 40% ABV (80-proof) liqueur made from scotch whisky, honey, herbs and spices

Glayva is made from a blend of aged Scotch whiskies, a selected range of spices, Mediterranean tangerines, cinnamon, almonds and honey. It has a deep golden colour and a distinctive flavour

I prefer those - but both are exceptionally sweet.

Lucylastic -> RE: Favourite Whisky? (4/25/2015 8:57:44 AM)

mmmmmmm drambuie
yummy stuff,

I'm still trying to track down some of the suggestions from local suppliers. I'll post my reviews on here sometime in the future for anyone that's interested.

I like my Jack's with ice and a touch of coke.

If I'm going to drink straight Bourbon I prefer Woodford Reserve over any of the Jack's line

I was told the distinction was one of being distilled in Bourbon Co. Kentucky....but I think we were deep into a bottle of Jack's at the time so what do I know....lol
