Mar-a-Lago: The price of Trump's 'Winter White House'

Key points

$3.3 million Estimated cost of each weekend trip by President Trump to Mar-a-Lago Which is about $30 million so far in three months for those trips alone.

Added to that, the decision to keep his wife Melania and son Barron living in Manhattan is costing the state an estimated $58 million per year, according to the New York Police Department.

Mr Obama spent $97 million on travel in his entire eight years in office - a figure Mr Trump could, at his current rate, comfortably outspend within his first year.

Mr Trump has at his disposal the traditional presidential retreat of Camp David, in Maryland, where for decades presidents have hosted foreign leaders. Camp David is a short helicopter trip from the White House and, as an existing Naval base, security comes cheap.

But the retreat was apparently not to Mr Trump's taste. "Camp David is very rustic, it's nice, you'd like it," he told a reporter. "You know how long you'd like it? For about 30 minutes." WTF Donald

So on track for $100 million – nope he is already just about there (for the pedantic the figure is ($40 million ytd - 3 month spend minimum).

So all this is going to cost $150-200 million a year? Guffaws perhaps hes looking to break $500 million for his 4 years..oh wait $1Billion guffaws loses bladder control just about here

Fair guffawed at this one too $200,000 Up front cost for membership (doubled after the election)

And trumps tweets about expenses:

When will Obama next go on vacation if he wins the election? The day after.

They all need security. For his wife and son, to keep them in New York is $60 million a year x 4 years = $240 million

His trips, as he doesn't like "rustic" camp david, hes at $40 millon for 3 months x 4 = $160 million x 4 years = $640 million..that is outrageous

$1000 million, $1 billion because they wont be far of that, is raving lunacy.

This isn't a matter of left or right.

Trump criticised Obama for wasting public money on trips and holidays and now he has blown Obama's annual budget for such things in a matter of weeks.

It represents a huge failure of public governance and the entire political system when this sort of hike in costs becomes a matter people are willing to gloss over because they support the guy responsible for it.

Who needs the $400,000 salary Trump has so graciously given up when it is dwarfed by setting up new domestic, hospitality and security arrangements which blow that in less than a weekend?
