Lordandmaster -> The Big East keeps shooting itself in the foot (11/25/2006 12:37:56 PM)

South Florida 24, West Virginia 19.

This morning, Kirk Herbstreit on ESPN said he thought West Virginia was a better team than LSU.  I guess he's going to have to revise that assessment.

I am not a sports fan, but am I to assume Florida is in the southern conference (hope I got that right)  how are they shooting themselves in the foot, if you would care to expound?

Ineptly,
Ron

SOUTH Florida, not Florida.  Florida is in the SEC (Southeastern Conference), and that's a whole different story.

After seeing USC dismantle ND, I would vote for them to play OS. USC looked as good as MICH to me.

i concur..

I think our two votes should count as three when the balloting begins.

Who cares about the BCS ... RICE is going to a bowl game!!!

It's a tough call, because Michigan didn't do much to lose its No. 2 ranking.  In fact, Michigan defeated Notre Dame even more soundly than USC last night, and they did it at South Bend.  I don't think I'll know how I'd vote until I see what USC does to UCLA next week.  If they clobber'em, I suppose I'll be convinced.

Okay, now if USC loses to UCLA, do we agree Michigan should get another crack at Ohio St? If not, who else? Florida? LSU? Boise State?? [:D]

If USC loses, then there's no way in my mind that anyone deserves it more than Michigan--certainly not a 2-loss LSU team that got manhandled by Florida.  Boise State is really good, and they may even beat Nebraska or someone like that in their BCS bowl, but they're not contenders for the national championship, not with that schedule.

Michigan's passing attack and secondary are not as good as USC's.

Michigan has better running game and front seven, although USC's front seven is damn good too.

Michigan had its chance at OS, so when USC wins out they deserve a crack at the title.

I'd also take Pete Carrol over Lloyd Carr in terms of a coaching edge.

USC trounced ND about as thoroughly as a team could. I don't see Mich's win over ND as any more decisive.

Against MICH, I felt Brady Quinn was off and had a bad game, too. Against USC he played better, but it didn't make enough of a difference.

USC has so much talent. We can only hope you pick up girls the way Pete Carrol tabs top recruits.

Well, Pete and I have been doing the friendly competition thing for a few years now.

By the way, several computers have USC ranked above Ohio State now:

I kinda think that's ridiculous, but I'm not a computer.

Edited to add: And how can LSU be above Florida when Florida kicked their asses?  Makes no sense to me.

I am most displeased.  I want a rematch between Michigan & Ohio State (I know that's not the popular choice)

The computers should be thrown in the ocean.

Playoff, not PC.

You know why there's no playoff system in college football, right?

Level -> RE: The Big East keeps shooting itself in the foot (11/26/2006 8:01:08 PM)

Because evil rules the world?? No... must be money, somehow...

I've also heard that they complain that it'll disturb the scheduling of classes. What have you heard?

Lordandmaster -> RE: The Big East keeps shooting itself in the foot (11/26/2006 8:05:35 PM)

Because the big six conferences can't be guaranteed that they'll win if the champion is determined on the field.  It's no secret.  The original BCS was designed to crown a "champion" without having to give in to a playoff system.  That's exactly why each of the six major conferences gets an automatic berth.  Anyway, it was expanded as of this year so that small-conference teams would automatically qualify if they rank highly enough (like Boise State this year), but that was only after years of agitating--and since it involves adding another bowl game to the mix, it doesn't cost the major conferences to appear generous.

Level -> RE: The Big East keeps shooting itself in the foot (11/26/2006 8:11:30 PM)

I don't get it, because there's no guarantee anyway. Heck, you have a better chance with a playoff, because the computers narrow it down to two teams, a playoff would give 6 or 8 teams a shot at it.

Lordandmaster -> RE: The Big East keeps shooting itself in the foot (11/26/2006 8:15:32 PM)

No small-conference team is ever going to make one the top two slots in the BCS rankings: their schedules are simply too weak.  But if you have a playoff system with six or eight teams, you just might have to let in a team like Boise State, and if they go and get hot in the playoffs, they can wipe everyone out.  And the big conferences lose a few bazillion dollars in TV revenue and bowl payouts...
