Maybe "nonpartisan" would be a better word.

Despite my bizarre (for an American liberal) fondness for Her Majesty, it has occured to me that laying the monarchy to rest when the old girl goes may not be the worst idea.

dc, I won't spoil your thread with a political outburst but I'd like to think the future does not involve a relic from a bygone age. Here's hoping.

Having said this, democracy rules and if the people want them then I'll go with the majority view.

The Queen doesnt really have any political power and as far as i can see answers to the government in power so nonpartisan again may not be the right word.
Other than what they bring in in the way of tourists i think the monarchy is obselete. The question is do they bring more money in than they cost us?

Rationally, I think you're probably right. But then I think of those fabulous hats . . .

Fair enough, though the royal website (not the most neutral source, I realize) claims it comes to just 62p per person.

Just think: You could be paying to house George W. Bush!

In Canada we still have Governors, a throwback from our colonial past. The provinces have Lieutenant Governers (pronounced leff-ten-ant, in Canada) and a Governor General nationally. They are appointed by the Government and have only ceremonial power. Many Canadians resent them but I find they set a tone for the country, both at home and abroad. They often advocate for citizens and hold the Government gently to account.

A heredity monarchy will always tend towards corruption but a ceremonial first citizen might not be a bad thing.

Don't some countries have largely ceremonial presidents?

Oh they do. The queen recently intervened in a high profile court case and she was immune from cross-examination as head of state.

The inference being, if they want something censored they have the power to do so. What democracy? - I don't see it.

Time to lop a few heads off..........where's the French when you need them.

I think you'll find that when it comes to parliamentary decisions she has about as much say as you or me.

The website says, "The Queen pays most of the taxes to which any UK citizen is liable."

Have you seen the movie, Benji? The queen is quite a dog person!

Well, as Protector of the Crown, the Prime Minister has the authority to take us into any war he/she wants without consultation with anyone. What d'ya reckon.........democracy?

Take away the crown and there ain't no Protector of the Crown.

Plus, these people are appointed, they're not elected - it's ridiculous.

I would like to see something along the lines of the American model with a second chamber who are elected such as the House of Representatives - the difference being, a house free from corruption would be much appreciated.

If you think about, what do we have to do just to get a democracy in place? - it should be so simple but we've never had it and it's not looking a prospect in the near future.

It hasn't always been that way.
As for being a dog person there have been at least two occasions of the royal families dogs biting people and they were not prosecuted and the dogs were not put down. Theres justice for ya.

The royal family are appointed? If thats what you are saying its not strictly true is it? They are born into it and with sucession being in place its all about being the first born male too.
I think the word democracy is also a little obselete in that it doesnt exist and i dont think it ever will. I don't pretend to understand politics very well and i dont think i ever will but i do understand thats what best for our country is always off sided for power, greed, financial gain.

So much heat. So little light.

As usual on this topic.

But I'll not intrude any further.

Have fun.

I've seen the movie twice now. I thought Helen Mirren was awesome. I hope she wins an Academy Award for her performace.

Do you not have an opinion on the royal family?
