Yes, Helen Mirren did receive two golden globe awards this past week. However, one was for a tv miniseries where she ironically enough played Elizabeth I. The other one for The Queen where she played Elizabeth II. What are the odds on that?

Did Helen Mirren keep her clothes on when she sang Bohemian Rhapsody ? She's an actresses actress, stuck up and drops her knickers at every opportunity, Only if the motivation of her character demands it you understand, she's too refined to be an exhibitionist. I think Joan Rivers should have got the part... or Phyliss Diller !

watching the Oscar nominations - Helen Mirren was nominated for Best Actress and 3 more nominations for Best Direction, Original Screenplay, and Best Picture

A Monarchy can only ignore public opinion and stick its head in the sand for so long. It was interesting to see the Royal family, dependent on public money, conduct itself in such an anti-populist way. Watching Tony Blair trying to influence the Royal family was more than amusing. Truly, Dianna was "The Queen" the British people wanted whereas Queen Elizabeth is the one they got. This is central to the film. When Diana was killed and achieved martyr status, this rift was exacerbated. Elton John would never have written "Candle in the Wind" for the actual Queen. That's got to hurt. The title of Queen doesn't earn you love, respect, and admiration and being born into a Royal family has certain inbred, soul destroying elements to it that contribute to perpetuating a line of unpopular Monarchs.

Yup the british people (loose term) wanted a one-time nobody, later media star who was adept at always portraying herself in the best possible light. Operation desert storm was called the first TV war, Diana was the first TV royal, no different from the Jade Goody's or Victoria Beckhams of today. Elton John originally wrote candle in the wind about another blonde, media-created star that died at a relatively early age, NOT about diana. Then he re-released it for a kid with cancer, then he rehashed it a little to perhaps cash in on the mass of sentimentality. Should he have written such a thing for the death of the queen mother (possibly the most loved/respected member of the family at the time), he would have been accused of being vulgar and trying to cash in I think.

Went to see the movie last night, rather than watch a liar lie. The movie was astounding. Ms. Mirrim delivered a shockingly effective performance even though her character showed virtually no emotion and seemingly never spoke her mind to anyone. I've always been puzzled by what changed the very pretty, and seemingly lively, princess in a picture my uncle brought home from his time in England before June of '42 into the distant seeming recluse that is the Queen.
