While "leather" lifestyle comes out of primarily the gay experience, and it's history, at least recorded as such goes back to WWII, I believe...it is not strictly a gay or lesbian institution or experience. The leather world has expanded to include the pansexual world, albeit in some communities, a little begrudgingly.

Leather to me is about tradition, protocol, community, and allegiance. In a broad sense I consider myself a leather woman and part of the larger leather community, but more specifically I think of myself simply as a Lifestyler. I believe in and hold to many leather traditions, specifically those that speak to principles of Mastery and slavery. That having been said, however, I'm not big on wearing leather...and I know other people who identify with "leather" ways, but who do not wear leather...and then there are those who insist you must have a leather wardrobe and you must "earn" your leathers. The point being that there is room within the larger leather community for variations in thought and tradition. And still there are those who are very strict and "Old Guard" about their leather traditions.
