David Chase is ending the series very darkly. Tony, who more than anyone else in the crew showed some hope of development, has simply devolved and regressed. His judgement, leadership, and interpersonal skills have degraded. This turn of Tony seems forced to me, but the writers have used Tony's the gambling addiction (which seems untrue to his character to me) to undermine all the progress he made in therapy, saving his marriage, and from his near death experience. In the end as Hesch sees Tony we see Tony: as stupid, reckless, childish, and ineffective. In parallel stories Hesch sees Tony as Tony sees AJ. I must admit disappointment, b/c I wanted to come away with a little more than, "they're just a bunch of cretin, low lifes." I don't think I will. For more I invite you to read Heather Havilevsky. I think she nails it.
