"Cars burnt, police hurt in French election violence"

"PARIS, May 7 (Reuters) - Hundreds of people were arrested in France overnight in clashes between police and protesters who torched cars following conservative Nicolas Sarkozy's victory in Sunday's presidential election, police said.

Official figures released early on Monday said demonstrators set fire to 367 cars and injured 28 policemen across France, and 270 people were arrested in the violent protests against the tough-talking former interior minister.

Reports and eyewitness accounts suggested the violence was worse than the official statistics indicated because they did not include other incidents such as petrol bomb attacks on buses near Paris or smashed up shop fronts in large cities.

The final national tally was also at odds with local figures. Paris officials said 33 policemen were injured in the capital, five more than the national total cited by police.

Leftist sympathisers clashed with police in Paris's Bastille Square after Sarkozy's comprehensive victory against Socialist Segolene Royal and security forces fired repeated rounds of tear gas to break up the crowd.

Youths went on the rampage in adjoining streets, smashing phone cabins and shop windows as they moved towards the nearby Gare de Lyon station.

"Everyone got hit. We heard people were at the Bastille but we didn't expect them to come up here," said Sophie Wolkowitch, whose pharmacy near the station had its windows smashed and suffered 14,000 euros ($19,000) of damage.

Similar attacks were reported in the southeastern city of Lyon and the southern city of Toulouse. Bus shelters were smashed in the northern city of Lille and a school was set on fire in the Paris suburb of Evry.

In the northern department clustered around Lille, about 100 cars were torched, the fire brigade said."

Those socialists are like spoiled children when they lose.
Don't they have like, "interventions" for socialists?
Like put them on a dry out farm for 60-90 days?

Yep... it's good news. The more cars burn, the more the French governement's likely to reconsider its entire approach to policy making. It's nothing to do with the socialist party, popeye, by the way.

You're absolutely right, Popeye. If voters go against the Socialists, then the Socialists throw a tantrum every time. They're like little children that way. Remember the Mexican elections? Same song and dance there, too.

I guess they saw what Thatcher did to Britain and don't want Sarkozy doing the same thing to France.

The left don't have state power but the right do. You must be aware of the McCarthy era, that is the right equivalent to riots.

Heh!  The Right has their wackos as well--Does the name Timothy McVeigh ring a bell?  What about the right-wing paramilitaries in Colombia?  Gen. Augusto Pinochet in Chile?  Franco in Spain?  Hitler in Germany?  Mussolini in Italy?  A strong case can be made that Al Qaeda is a right-wing organization--it is against the extention of "too much" liberty, it's xenophobic, it wants to preserve "traditional" values.  All of these individuals have used, or are using, violent means to conservative ends.

Thinking about it, just about every great reform and every battle against capitalism in the western world was won on the streets first. Sarkozy said he wants to bury 1968, that was a call to arms in itself. He invited people out onto the streets. No doubt to show he is the hard man. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't but if it doesn't, he has himself to blame.

Amen. Everything I've read about this guy tells me he's basically a facsimile of Blair. Knowing that, I think I'd burn things too.

Selfbnd, Timothy McVeigh was a Leftist.
He was vehimently "anti-government" he read that anarchist tome "The Turner Diaries" and just hated anything or anyone involved with the govt.

P.S. a lot of people think that if someone wears "camos" -camoflaged military style pants that you must be a "rightest".
Not true, you can't judge a person's political state or leanings by their wardrobe.

C'est vrai, l'habit ne fait pas le moine.

Hmmm, if somebody's wearing KKK garb though, I'd be enclined to think they were on the whacko side of right wing.

Kittinsol, I wouldn't know. You should probably direct that question to Senator Robert "Sheets" Byrd D.- W.V.

In the French media it appears that now everything is settling down that they don't believe Sarkozy will do very much but talk a lot. He was a member of a French government that several times backed down in the face of riots and even many of his voters hate Le système d'Anglo-Saxon enough to head onto the streets if they see their way of life threatened. Many of his supporters are hypocrits from the 1968 riot generation, 61% of them voted for Sarkozy. My guess is when their pensions are threatened they won't feel so comfortable with him.

One interesting point I read was that poverty in France was half the poverty in the USA, a much higher minimum wage on average, have a longer life expectancy and retire on average 7 years earlier than their American counterparts. Is there any wonder why Brits are buying up homes in France at a voracious rate.

I've been fortunate enough to test the produce.

Judgeing from the past years multiple riots in France it was just another excuse to destroy other people's stuff because they could.

It's some "rich" shopowner's window, and I have no job so I can rationalize breaking it.
Plenty of rationalization availale if someone wants to destroy someone elses property reguardless of political bent.
The question is one of what is the accepted response to something you don't like or even something you do like.
Is it acceptable to destroy other people's property?
