I've been following this very closely since it first came to light. The fact that a government agency has it's head up it's ass and is lying through it's teeth doesn't surprise me much. What I am surprised about is that people are seemingly believing their crap...."they say it's not a risk". Come on folks....thousands of animals are DEAD. I am surprised that all of this has been downplayed by the media....most of the FDA statements and recalls have gotten little more than a blurb here and there and they are always followed by "we believe....". Well so far they have been wrong on every front and every time they come out and say the crisis is over there is another recall within days.

Now come to find out, that rice protein concentrate that is contaminated is actually wheat flour. Oh well, that isn't in too many foods is it???? Hogs, chickens, fish, flour. I'm waiting for them to say beef...I mean cows eat feed too don't they. That would mean that the meat we consume most in this country is tainted....and also our dairy supplies. So what's left?

The other thing that amazes me is that knowing what they now know...they still aren't stopping the import of these products. They are concentrating their investigative efforts on two products....wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate....and telling us that they will "watch the other imported products to see if there are any serious spikes in unusual illnesses that may be a result of them".

In case you can't tell....I'm more than just a little pissed. The article said FDA stands for Faithbased Dining Administration......I'd say that is far too nice. Fucking Dumb Asses is much more appropriate.

If you want to keep up on the latest info on the whole mess...     http://www.itchmo.com/   has been doing a great job. I get most of the recalls and press releases in my email before they make it to the news.

It's revolting, yeah. Did you follow the whole 'mad cow' debacle in 1996?

What's intriguing is, as you so rightly pointed out, that the media are keeping so quiet about the whole thing. I wonder who's got a gag down their throat *sigh*.

I'm going back to being a vegeterian. I was one for five years whilst at college in England (spot on time to avoid eating CJD infected meat) and it didn't do me any harm!

who said being a vegetarian was any safer? remember that Spinach E. Coli scare?

I sure as hell do, ugh.

Back in the late 80s, I used to be a junior traffic clerk in a transport company that moved frozen meat around, here in the UK.

We had one client - a merchant, who would buy and sell meat all over the UK and Europe. He got on to a good thing and we ended up doing the transport.

We would receive the order, to go and load 20 tonnes of meat that was unfit for production, from a certain pet food factory which will remain nameless - but its in the east of England.

So, in we would go and load. Huge slabs of offal, frozen at -25 centigrade, about 3' x 4' and 6'' deep and with all the entrails etc clearly visible. The driver would be issued the notes about the meat and where it was to go - for disposal.

Well, the driver would then drive about 20 miles down the road and meet a man in a layby. Helpful chap that he must have been, this guy from the ministry then replaced the driver's notes with new ones. Hey presto, meat unfit for pet food was now fit for human consumption, and it was off to the sausage and burger factory of a certain well known brand that is to remain nameless. Every week, for years. And it was going on all over the place apparently - only discovered when the CJD thing blew up and the journalists went investigating.

Its taken a lot of time for me to eat anything with processed meat in it since then, and even now I only ever buy the best burgers, sausages etc.
