Ok...as a Gorean I will weigh-in. Many of us feel about a lot of BDSM like you do about Goreans, except not as highly. <grins>
Offline Gorean men really only have one title. If they own a slave or slaves they are a Master (of slaves). If they don't own slaves, they are just a man. Master (or Mistress) is used by the slaves of Goreans as a courtesy title for all Free men and women. That is because of the relationship of the slave to those who are not, rather than something the other person achieved. The online players take a bunch of titles out of the books and give them to themselves. The most common are Ubar, Jarl and First Sword. We find them about as amusing as most of you find people who give themselves fanciful titles that they can't prove.
Of course, the most amusing are the ones who put a title in their online nick. The SirLordMasterDomWhatever with some slave or sub's nick added are the most amusing. I have a simple rule about nicks. If you have to put what you are in your nick, you aren't. I won't even go into the ones who give themselves such macho or (fill-in-the-blank) descriptive nicks that they think will make themselves sound so much more attractive to the ones they are after. Now, something like JoeInTexas or chi-alice or 3catowner, I don't have as much of a problem with. I may still be amused, but not in the same way.
