drawntothedark -> What is a Saxophone and what is a Mandolin? (5/10/2007 1:08:50 PM)

I did a search.....but nothing came up. Of course- if my answer was out there and I over looked it- I apologize to LA [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m9.gif[/image]

I was on a web site yesterday where they had a lot of BDSM T-Shirts. I saw a few shirts that had "Saxophone Player" or "Mandolin Player" on them. I have no idea what it means. I have racked my brain around it, and still nothing comes to mind. I do not see the connection. I would really like someone to explain this to me if you know.

So where did these sayings come from and what on earth do they mean?

Maybe one sucks and the other manipulates, I donno.  Sometimes a saxophonist and a mandolin player are just musicians, I donno.  Interesting to see what others say about it.

'Ya gotta have a dirty mind to even be here, 'ya know?

Edited because I can, and because I've just got too much time on my hands.

daddysliloneds -> RE: What is a Saxophone and what is a Mandolin? (5/10/2007 1:18:09 PM)

saxaphone:  good with their mouth [:)]
mandolin:  good with their fingers[:D]

that's my take on it if it's meant to be bdsm related

I did a quick search & the only place these shirts show up is on http://www.cafepress.com/opheliasart/418326 & I have no idea how these fit in as being kinky.

As far as I knew I always heard it was best to hook up with the drummer. Drummers keep a beat & keep on jammin [sm=lol.gif]

Guess you need to contact Ophelia

*shrug* Sorry, nothing here.  The "good with fingers/mouth" idea sounds good to me, or something about playing the person like a mandolin or such...I have no clue.

Yeah, it's got to mean either oral sex or clitoral manipulation.  In any case, it's a brain teaser.

MstrssPassion -> RE: What is a Saxophone and what is a Mandolin? (5/10/2007 1:27:04 PM)

google is our friend:

Old Guard- Born out of the end of WWII, by gay leather men. Code words were used: 'Do you play the mandolin or the saxophone?' to discover which of them was the masochist or the sadist by the first letter of these instruments. For the era and the times, The Old Guard and its rigid social structure and manners/protocols were needed. The Old Guard will always be around, it is tradition.

And here I was thinking it was like a rusty trombone.
Silly me.

Edited to add...hey domiguy, great minds think alike.

Strange.  I didn't see it as specifically a gay thing.  I only saw it as either performing oral sex or giving clitoral stimulation.  I didn't equate strumming a mandolin as being a masochist.  Maybe I should learn to play one.  *lol*  ;-)

T-shirts are a drag anyway.  I've owned a corporation T for years, but it never got me a corporate position.  Oh, well...

Edited because I can, and because...

The way i'm looking at it, and this may be wrong...the reason they used mandolin and saxophone was only the letters. Mandolin...Masochist. Saxophone...Sadist. Shows the first letter, and anyone who understood the question would understand the question was S or M, not instruments. And if the person didn't understand it, and gave an instrument choice (I don't play either...I play piano.), then they knew they weren't into BDSM. Just my thoughts...no fact-based information in it.

I would have gone out and bought the wrong doggone T-shirt.

Assuming that "mandolin" equates with "masochist" and "saxophone" equates to "sadist" really hurts my head, because it is way too vague.  I would like to hear from and old guard sadist or masochist on this subject before I can personally accept the premise that the first letter of these two words, or any words, necessarily define the meaning.

From what i've read about Old Guard (not much, i admit, but some...), vagueness was very important. i mean, we're talking end of World War II...S/m was a lot more taboo and vilified in the '40s and '50s. Being gay alone was considered evidence of mental illness, and being into S/m was widely considered to be evidence of being even more mentally ill.

So they came up with a system of codes that would be recognized by others of their group. Examples are white t-shirts for boys/slaves, black t-shirts for Daddies/Masters; and armband on the left for Top/Dom/Master/Daddy, armband on the right for bottom/sub/slave/boy.

I agree with damia on this one....

Yes, gender preference and S/M was misunderstood and a very taboo subject during WWII, as well as in subsequent wars and military actions prior to the Gulf War, but it is none the less interesting how this coding method got started.  B-29 and B-36 bombing raids during over cities in Japan and Germany up until 1945 had a very low survival rate.  And it is difficult to imagine what a crew member on any given bombing raid was thinking...or maybe just reacting to...the fog of war.  But it is none the less fascinating to imagine how a crew member of a bomber group would initiate a conversation with another crew member by saying, "Are you a saxophone player or a mandolin player?" when they are at 40,000 feet and and experiencing a Japanese onslaught of Zeros, and all the time freezing due to lack of a pressurized and heated cabin.

Just as an aside here, before and during the war, kinky folks seeking to identify each other would sometimes defensively ask, 'Do you play the mandolin or the saxophone?' to discover which of them was the masochist or the sadist by the first letter of these instruments.  All this while wearing street clothes!   The creation of a butch subculture by the gay vets began to allow people to specialize their sexual interests in a way that had been impossible earlier.   Prior to this development, it was not apparent that there were very many ways to be gay.
