Okay, it’s like this: I work across the street from a place that gives boat tours of the Erie Canal and the Locks. So it is not at all unusual to see cars, tour buses and the occasional limo parked there. Today, as I was heading out to run some errands I saw a limo pull up. Unlike most limos, this one had three bumper stickers on it. The first read Goddess bless America. The second read, obedient women are never remembered in history. The third read, I love men – when they obey. The driver, a fifty-ish something man dressed in an immaculate chauffeur’s uniform, got out and opened the rear door. Out came three women, all late thirties to early forties and very well dressed. They proceeded toward the tour boat while the driver stood by the car and waited. I ran my errands and when I cam back, the tour was still out and the driver was still standing there, patiently waiting.

Well, even a totally vanilla person could figure out what was up with these people but it reminded me of another time I spotted some people who I thought were "in the scene." It was some years ago (late eighties) and I was in a mall having some lunch. Across the hall I could see a young couple (early twenties) in the music store. Nothing about the way they were dressed made them stand out, they weren’t wearing leather collars or t-shirts with BDSM slogans or anything like that. It was the way they moved, or more specifically, the way she moved. She (a beautiful brunette with doe eyes) always kept a couple of paces behind him, slightly to the right. The thought that entered my mind was heeling. My God, I thought, she’s heeling him. The more I watched them, the more I became convinced I was right, everything about her movements just said submissive. Only he was looking at the music, she just kept her eyes on him (with an adoring look that would make a radical feminist want to wretch), and always kept pace with him. She also wore a braided leather choker which most people wouldn’t give too much thought to but it convinced me that I was looking at a genuine Master/slave (or at least Dom/sub) couple. The clincher was when they left. He paid for his purchase, then handed the bag to her to carry before they left – her following behind him.

So my question to people is: outside in the vanilla world (e.g. the grocery store, a restaurant) have you ever spotted a person or persons you were sure were "into the scene." People who on the surface looked like everyone else (no obvious "I’m into BDSM" clothing or accessories) but you were certain you knew "what was up." What was it about them that clued you in? Have you ever been able to share a knowing wink and a nod with complete strangers?

Limo people update: after the boat tour the three women came into the art gallery where I work (the driver continued to patiently wait by the limo – I wonder when the poor guy gets to go to the bathroom?), spending about an hour and a half here. I would have loved to talk with them about something other than the weather or "what there is to do around here," but I didn’t dare, and with good reason. Once the left, everyone else in the gallery started talking about them, wondering if they were some of those "weirdo fetish freaks."

Sigh.

The problem I find can be thinking everyone is associated with the scene when they are not. This is my problem because I tend to think why you would not want the associated excitement in your life. So I look at a couple and wonder what they get up to behind closed doors but sadly I’m just projecting my fantasies onto others.

I did once - I was in Philadelphia (center city) walking outside the building where I worked and a couple passed me, she was somewhat in front and his hand was clasping the back of her neck leading her from behind.  It is exactly the same way a past Master of mine handled me when we were outside walking and I knew she was His right away.

There is a young lesbian couple that attends a lot of the same bowling events that we do.  One of them always wears a leather collar with a ring in the front.  I was sitting alone with her partner one day so i said something like i think it's nice that her partner wears her collar in public.  She said, oh she just likes to dress that way (she also has pink hair and tats).  So i said i assumed she was her submissive and she said no, it's not lke that.  I hope i didn't embarass her and am still not sure if her partner just likes to dress like that or maybe she didn't want to admit the lifestyle to a 60 yr old mother of a friend of theirs.

haven't spotted any however they have spotted me at a couple of  shows i've reviewed ...especially it's a goth/vampire or  metal show i'm at.  one guy almost fell down the stairs because he was getting an eyeful of my "wedding ring" around my neck. i took it as a sign that he never saw a black woman wearing a collar before. later that night, the same guy spotted me again to say "you look very beautiful with your Gor collar around your neck".

however mostly, i've noticed different racial reactions whenever i out in public with my collars on. i get weird glances and whispered comments from people whenever i ride public transportation from black people. from white people, i get nods and smiles or nothing at all.

I actually see it pretty often, but I live in the DC metro area and there is a fairly large scene here. What usually tips me off is not the dress, but the manner that people carry themselves. There is a certain grace that well trained subs/slaves carry with them even in the vanilla world.
