Hmm...I wonder what the Geico cavemen would say about this?

" WASHINGTON - A skull found in a cave in Romania includes features of both modern humans and Neanderthals, possibly suggesting that the two may have interbred thousands of years ago.

Neanderthals were replaced by early modern humans. Researchers have long debated whether the two groups mixed together, though most doubt it. The last evidence for Neanderthals dates from at least 24,000 years ago. "

I think that you can see evidence of it in some people's facial structure in some modern humans. My gawd sometimes they've got pronounced brows and somewhat flattened faces, not to mention the lower jaw that receeds quite a bit.

Greetings Madame Dahlia -

I've read a fair bit about that. The Habsburgs did it so often that they've got a particular form of prognathism named after them. Two other biggies that were prevalent are hemophilia and various forms of retardation... mental, physical or both. It's rather fascinating stuff. I'm especially keen on reading about genetic research, manipulation and anomalies.

And my recent favorite bit of reading pertains to anything having to do with "delta 32". It's a mutated form of the gene "CCR5". Studies have shown that delta 32 prevents HIV from entering human cells. Truly an amazing find.

The discovery came about when Dr. Stephan O'Brien speculated that people may have been immune to the Black Death that devastated Europe. Apparently the bubonic plague attacks the human body in a way very similar to the way HIV spreads through a human. Both the plague and HIV use the white blood cells for their own nefarious purposes. The presence of the delta 32 gene mutation makes it impossible for both the plague and HIV to hijack blood cells, leaving anyone lucky enough to have the mutation immune to both.

MsV: one of the links supplied in your link shows that DNA studies reveal  that Neanders and Humans did not interbreed. What about that then ?

Also it would be very interesting to know what was really found. The picture in the link looks suspiciously complete to me..
I wouldn't be surprised if they found a tooth or two some bone and a broken toe nail allowing the investigators to conclude that Neanders invented nail clippers.

Cynical, moi...naaaagh !

There was a TV documentary on a while ago about Neanderthals. They looked as far as they could at how their bodies were built (from skeletal remains) and posited some interesting stuff out about them;

- Neanderthals were not very good at running or jumping (leg structure and poorly developed balance). It was posited that this was a main contributor to their slaughter by humans, since we had not only the capacity to run them down but also we apparently had spear throwing technology which they lacked. Our advantage came apparently from living and hunting on prairie whilst they had evolved to live in dense forest where running and kills from distance were impossible.
- They were very strong - the average Neanderthal was much stronger than even the strongest human atheletes (skeletal structure and density and muscle attachments)
- They may have spoken - but their voices were high pitched; a Neanderthal male would have had a voice similar to a human child (size and structure of voicebox)

Given their supposed look, I cant imagine many human males willingly interbreeding with Neanderthal females. Given their supposed look, I cant imagine many human females willingly interbreeding with Neanderthal males. But it could have happened I would suppose.

Given that a human female was caught hold of by a Neanderthal male, she would find it very difficult to escape due to his strength. Alternatively, a Neanderthal male with perhaps less pronounced features might have been thought to be a pretty good mate, given his strength and consequent capacity to defend any offspring. I have to say though, that a 300lb ugly guy with a child's voice wouldnt be my choice particularly!

Given that a human male was desperate enough and since we have plenty enough cases nowadays of problem sexual behaviour in males, its not beyond the bounds of possibility for him to have secured by hunting a Neanderthal female and overpowered her even though her strength would likely match his.

Overall though, I would put any interbreeding down to some sort of religious reason, with one or perhaps both sides seeing the other as in some way endowed with special significance, and any offspring as being specially blessed by virtue of the mixing of that side with the other.

E

I'm going to be crude now, to quote Cynthia Payne, she ran a brothel in the UK and when she was caught and sentenced she was quite brazened about it and made a good living on chat shows and things like that,  anyway she said.

Men are all right once they have been de spunked.
She meant having ejaculated their little tadpoles out into the world.
I think Cynthia  was right dont you ?

Lady E,

Have you ever read The Clan of the Cave Bear books by Jean Auel?

http://www.jeanmauel.co.uk/

The main character is a homo sapien female that is orphaned
and raised by a group of Neanderthals.
When she reaches sexual maturity, one of the dominant men
in the group rapes her repeatedly and their result is a cross
between the two.  Of course given the large size of the the
infant's skull, she nearly dies in childbirth.

An interesting hypothesis to be sure,

Seeks, the DNA evidence is from a small sample of bones.
That is not enough data for a complete answer to the question
of interbreeding between the two groups.

"Cosmic Log: A Neanderthal's DNA tale"

http://cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2006/06/06/182.aspx

"But let's not get ahead of ourselves. One sample of 123 DNA base pairs is precious little to base a theory upon, and even Hänni's group acknowledges that more Neanderthal genetic sequences will be needed "to fully understand the extent of the past diversity of Neanderthals."'

Svante Pääbo of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, one of the pioneers of Neanderthal DNA analysis, is of the same mind about the latest findings. In an e-mail, he told me that "there is not disagreement with what we have found."

"However, I think that there is too little data to say something [about] how diversity changed over time in Neanderthals," he wrote. "There is a single individual that is old ... and only four younger ones for which reasonable lengths of sequence are available, and for the latter ones, the datings are not very secure." "

I think a lot of the ladies around here could show us e-mail they've received that suggests a human-Neanderthal link.

Ya, you got that right, happy! How about some of the pics too?
Ever see a guy that looks like he should be one of the Geico
cavemen?  lol

Wow - nobody's made this a political thread yet?

This must be some kind of a record!
