       I really don't want to do the gun thing, Explorer.  And yes, the power of a firearm to keep the home safe is as mythical as the conclusions I come to about accident scenes.  Of course, the numbers that can easily be linked to or quoted make no mention of the effectiveness of simply working the action of a pump shotgun in the darkness.  

    Come right down to it, all home security can be completely mythical.  Guns may be legal, but in a state like California strict adherence to the laws about storing them takes them right out of a crisis equation.   Watchdogs can be the most effective security going, but there are plenty that will simply watch.  Alarms have to be set, deadbolts and window-bars are no prevention against a ruse entry.  Yet people will find comfort in those myths. 

     Perhaps you could explore how some find comfort in placing blame on the system?
