Another quote, quite popular and well known that I have enjoyed .

“You risked much for a mere point of honor?” she asked.
“There are no mere points of honor,” I told her.

Ok *laughs* I recognise it now in the full context... thank you, Kiaban.

A thought on the "are you a slave when you're not owned" thing...
You don't stop feeling the desire to serve because you're no longer owned...
Your personality, your beahiour... that doesn't really change either...

Is it the Master that makes you a slave, or does the slave define her slavery by her own actions and orientation?
I think both, actually... if a man was to literally own you, (no fantasy comments here please, we all know slavery does still exist in places) then you are a slave by definition, whether or not you want to be.
If you are a slave because it's just what you are inside, and that shapes your whole behaviour, demeanour, etc... then being owned or unowned doesn't change that, surely?

But having said that, what does an unowned slave submit to? And is s/he is a slave unles s/he is submitted?

Just some random thoughts....

Anything he or she wants.

Submission is not a pre-requisite of being owned, though in Ms it usually occurs together.

I suppose I will wade in on this one as well.
I strongly believe in orientation in regards to d and s ..having seen to many times what happens when someone tries to make someone something they are not.
Having said that though I think it can be drawn out and cultivated by another.
Dominance and submission tend to feed off each other creating more of the same.

P.S. How do I get my scary mug on my posts instead of the goofy looking bdsm symbol thingy?

BobcatsLilMinx -> RE: Opinions sought - more Gor. (5/11/2005 9:53:07 AM)

go to "My profile" at the top...
Scroll down til you come to "My avatar"..
Then you get a choice between avatars, uploading your own, or not having one.

That won't get rid of your goofy looking bdsm symbol... just post til you get a set of handcuffs, or something nice :)

Ah thanks, will check that out..and have to get that damn Vanilla thing off as well, I suppose I will actually have to be a contributing member of society here to do that.

To ally c.

That’s a very good girl. Very well done.

The short answer to this post is simple. "There is honor in service”. Just as master and slave are in some ways part of two different species, their honor is also derived in different ways.

Those damn books. I tell you they have spoiled the entire world to the real beauty of what is being said within them. It’s very much like finding nuggets of gold within horseshit. At a certain point the fact it's in horseshit has nothing to do with the contents.

Every successful "Gorean" I have ever known, and believe me I resent and fight the very idea that anyone can actually BE Gorean, (it’s a philosophical ethical construct for god’s sakes! I sometimes believe, when I am not otherwise content in my selfishness, "The greatest happiness for the greatest number." But I don’t call myself a Utilitarian!) has eventually moved beyond and above the series to understand that what was being described is not a new idea but rather the historical reality of the planet earth for the last 7 million years. Slavery, whether we accept it or not in this enlightened age, is a constant in humanity and within that constant is the extension of a possible natural order one in which some persons are naturally dominant while others are naturally submissive to those dominants. Within that order an archetype emerges within the master slave dynamic that can only be termed 'love slave'. It is a rare and stunning thing and is more a result of these ideas rather then their definition.

what confuses some people I think is that there are rituals associated with "being gorean". What most people don't realize however is that those rituals mostly serve to fortify personal identity. Just as a collar can cement a slaves identity in the mind with a physical reminder, rituals and traditions like the ones accepted in Goreanism can cement the identity and reality of a master slave dynamic.

Alex.
