"Wildfire smoke closes Florida highways"

2 hours, 28 minutes ago

" LAKE CITY, Fla. - Authorities briefly reopened two highways crossing north Florida into Georgia on Sunday before dense wildfire smoke forced them to again halt traffic, while hundreds of Florida residents waited to return to their threatened homes.

Officials said Sunday that the wildfire that had raced through the Okefenokee Swamp in southeast Georgia and into Florida had charred more than 233,700 acres — or about 365 square miles — since it was started by lightning a week ago.
Authorities reopened 90 miles of Interstates 75 and 10 for a couple of hours

Sunday morning after wind helped push the heavy smoke away from the highways. But they were later forced to close 35 miles of I-75 from the Florida-Georgia state line to Lake City, Fla., as well as a 40-mile stretch of I-10 in Florida, from Live Oak to Sanderson.

A 15-mile stretch of I-75 from Valdosta, Ga., to the Florida state line remained open Sunday.

About 570 residents were not being allowed to return to 150 homes evacuated between I-10 and the Florida-Georgia state line. "

There's nothing like waking up, going outside for the paper, and breathing in three packs of Marlboro Everglades. Mmm Mmm.. Always goes down smooth.

My parents live in Lake City.  I have been getting updates on this.  Very unpleasant situation down there.  No rain since February.

Florida has its share of problems with taxes and home owners insurance.  Some would say it is a trainwreck.

Even the America is sparesly populated- that is changing fast.

I was there once. Some of the homes- i think it was bradenton were practically cardboard.  we had fun. loved the fresh grrape fruit. i havent been down there in 20 yrs.  im sure it is like any other state were there are diffenct sections with different attributes.

i have a freind here- she comes from New jersey- they purposefully sought out a low tax area, well- now she is plotting to go to Tennesea where taxes are low.

people trumpet the sunbelt. but i think there are still good qualities about teh rustbelt.

i tried living in FL once - wayyyyyy to hot for me and it's flat everywhere - i like and am used to mountainous areas.  i also hate thunder and lightening - and everyday where i was there was a storm.  my friend just came up from the Orlando area and was talking about the smoke - she leaves today to go back i hope she can get home ok.  She is about ready to relocate as 5 hurricaines hit Orlando and her nerves are about fried.

pahunkboy -> RE: "Wildfire smoke closes Florida highways" (5/14/2007 8:57:32 AM)

it would certainly fry my nerves to have teh threat of so many herricenes.

the old timers here are very much against the new riverfront ampetheator they are set to build here. well- what some dont realize about the wall- is 6 sections must be installed when there IS high water. one nice thing- is we are the very last place to lose power- as a series of pumps pump out the water when flooding is a threat. so surroundin communities will get power cut first. I qwas here in 96- and it was scarey when there was no way out. one by one hte bridges were under water. i must say there was some panic on my part when the last bridg went. i was never so tuned in as i was then.. the rumour was quelled quickly- while it is true it was closed briefly it then was reopened.

i called my gram in florida- they go donw for the winter, i told her the extent of damage. in 72 she had 10 inches of mud in her living room. in 96 nothing.
