French workers biggest whiners, Irish happiest: study
Mon May 14, 10:31 AM ET

French workers are the world's biggest whiners, according to a study published Monday which said the Irish complain least about their lot.

Britons come second to their Gallic cousins in the moaning stakes, followed by Sweden, the United States and Australia. Japanese workers have the lowest morale, but don't complain so much.

The lowest levels of whining were found in the Netherlands, Thailand and Ireland, according to the study by the FDS research group.

China says hopes economic woes with U.S. can be solved
Tue May 15, 4:04 AM ET

Friction between China and the United States is unavoidable amid rapidly growing economic ties, a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Tuesday, but added Beijing hopes tensions can be resolved through dialogue.

The two countries are holding a second round of a so-called strategic economic dialogue this month in Washington, covering investment policy, policy transparency, balanced growth, energy and the environment

Conn. high court mulls gay marriage case
By STEPHANIE REITZ, Associated Press Writer2 hours, 16 minutes ago

The long-simmering question of whether same-sex couples in Connecticut should be allowed to marry is now in the hands of seven state Supreme Court justices.

Arguments in the potentially groundbreaking case wrapped up in about three hours Monday, but it likely will be months before justices rule on the lawsuit that eight same-sex couples originally filed in August 2004.

The couples, who have been together between 13 and 31 years, allege their equal protection and due process were violated when they were denied marriage licenses in Madison Town Hall.

Extremist taunts his victims from prison
By JAY REEVES, Associated Press WriterMon May 14, 11:28 PM ET

Victims of Eric Rudolph, the anti-abortion extremist who pulled off a series of bombings across the South, say he is taunting them from deep within the nation's most secure federal prison, and authorities say there is little they can do to stop him.

Rudolph, who was captured after a five-year manhunt and pleaded guilty in deadly bombings at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and a Birmingham abortion clinic, is serving life in prison at the "Supermax" penitentiary in Florence, Colo.

India's top court suspends Gere-Shetty kiss cases
2 hours, 44 minutes ago

India's Supreme Court on Tuesday suspended all legal proceedings against Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, who is facing obscenity charges for not resisting a public kiss by Hollywood star Richard Gere.

Shetty, winner of the British reality television show "Celebrity Big Brother," made headlines last month when Gere twirled her in his arms, arched her over and kissed her several times on the cheek at an anti-AIDS show in New Delhi.

A lawyer filed a complaint in a lower court, describing the kiss as an obscene act under Indian laws.

British whingers. - When I started work at 15 I had to work with a grumpy old fart called Albert. His advice to me was 'Never let the bastards (bosses) know you're happy because they will go out of their way to make your life a misery.'  Once I got to know him well, I realised he wasn't a miserable fart at all, I think he was the happiest bloke I have ever worked. As long as he did his work the bosses stayed clear of him, no doubt depressed with the though of having to face his scowl and miserable disposition

Being a Yorkshireman born and bred meant being miserable came natural to him which helped.

One more "news" item lol:

Sarkozy soap opera grips Paris

By Caroline Wyatt
BBC News

Will she or won't she? Paris is abuzz with the question, as voters wonder whether Cecilia Sarkozy will be a full-time First Lady or not, as her husband Nicolas assumes power at the Elysee Palace on Wednesday.

Other nations have soap operas to keep them entertained. France has its own real-life political drama, which has so far kept millions tuned in - from the gripping episodes during the long-term feud between Nicolas Sarkozy, 52, and his former mentor, the outgoing President Jacques Chirac, to the recent cliff-hanger of the sporadic absences of Cecilia from her ambitious husband's side.
