You don't have to be afraid of everything you eat. Just make sure it's cooked thoroughly (kills the bacteria) and keep a clean, sanitary kitchen (prevents the spread of bacteria). Of course, you can't control the sanitary conditions in a restaurant. That's what health inspectors are for.

By the way, organic food products, as I understand it, are just produced without using artificial chemicals/fertilizers/feed/pesticides/preservatives/etc. Whether something is organic or not has little or nothing to do with what bacteria might be lurking in it.

<<-vegetarian here
I rarely and I do mean rarely eat ANY veggies that are not cooked.

I stopped eating raw veggies, years ago.
I am most comfortable when I can wash the veggies myself, I certainly eat very few raw food in restaurants.
Every now and then I will take a chance on a salad.
I just prefer my veggies COOKED.
If in doubt, cook it! [;)]
So even being a vegetarian, of course you must be careful!

juliaoceania -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/17/2007 4:10:35 PM)

If manure was used to create fertilizer it could contain ecoli.

I am not an alarmist whatsoever. I eat beef all the time. I just think it is better to be informed about how food borne illnesses come about than it is to believe one is safe because they are a vegetarian. It just isn't true. Yes, you are correct, cooking food thoroughly, sterilizing things that come into contact with raw meat, washing hands under hot water for 20 seconds (sing the happy birthday song or ABC song to self to time yourself) are very good ways to keep safe in the kitchen

I worked in the food and beverage industry for over 10 years and have been tested for food safety on more than one occasion. I know quite a bit about how to keep oneself from contracting an illness.

I remember one ecoli infection gotten off a salad bar by an employee that touched it without washing their hands first... I wash my hands very thoroughly when I am out and about (especially in the lavatory).

MzMia -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/17/2007 4:12:22 PM)

salad bars, bad!
OMG, no way

juliaoceania -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/17/2007 4:13:12 PM)

You do realize you were not meant to eat sterilized food and that some of the bacteria on and in your food is actually good for you. I eat all raw veggies, and I never get sick with the runs or nauseous.

MzMia -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/17/2007 4:19:38 PM)

If I want a raw veggie or fruit, I want to wash it myself.
My health is great so far!
I don't think I will die from eating mainly cooked foods.

You're right, that's how you build up immunities, by gradually being exposed to different things. They say now that you should let babies and small children play in the dirt a little bit, and that it's harmful to keep them sterile for that very reason. They (and we) need that exposure in order to keep our immune systems functioning properly

Remember that green onion thing-Taco Bell was killing people with contaminated green onions-I think it was e.coli. You still can't get green onions at Taco Hell now. The veggies are killers too. All this poisoned food shit started with NAFTA. Right after all the NAFTA crap went through, I remember Dan Rather reporting on bad strawberries going to kids-Cyclosporin or something like that.

I have to say that I think part of the problem with outbreaks like this is that our systems are very much compromised because of antibiotics and lack of exposure to natural foods.

Dont forget the hyper-anal cleaning NAZIs who pine-sol everything they can, slather up constantly with hand sanitizers (my MD/PhD buddy found live organisms in it during immunology class), etc.  I was reading in one of those science rags I read that it is method 2 of the development of the Super Bacteria from hell.  It kills off 99% of the population, those resistant to it survive to breed with others resistant to it, have resistant offspring, etc.

Intelligent design that!

domiguy -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/17/2007 10:26:30 PM)

I never use anti-bacterial hand soap....I actually rarely bathe...I consume ham and mayo sandwiches that I have left out in my car for a day or two....I never wash fruit, vegetables or pussy before dining...I am a walking petri dish....I am preparing myself to live through the epidemic....I don't live by the "five second" rule....My body has evolved and has become tougher....I recently received a blow job and my sperm ate through the gals cheek before she had a chance to swallow.

Oh please.  Green onions were the first suspect, but it turned out that the real culprit was contaminated lettuce.  Remember the e coli spinich outbreak?  That was caused by a contract farmer using cow manure as fertilizer.  NAFTA had absolutely nothing to do with it.

While NAFTA may not have played a part in that incident, it does play a major role in our current problems with food safety. Companies here have been forced to import goods from countries who don't share our standards regarding health and safety in order to stay competitive.

Thank you for your post! yes, thats exactly how i believe. It is due to all the antibiotics we are given by the Drs. You get them for everything from something they don't really think is a bacterial infection to something really serious like MRSA the antibiotic resistant staph that is out there. I had an operation and ended up with it. it took me 3 different dosages of antibiotics to even get rid of it. and i was weak, real suseptible to other things every time i went out. and it took me weeks to recover from that. it was insane.

sierraflowr:
In addition to all of the antibiotics that are administered to us don't forget the massive doses of antibiotics that are given to the  livestock which we eat.
Then of course there is the comforting thought that, in a restaurant, the last person to touch my flat ware and the dishes I eat off of  was working for minimum wage.

We all know thompsonx that the people that are taking the jobs Americans
don't want to do, wash their hands a lot.

asubmissiveheart -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/18/2007 4:25:35 AM)

domiguy,  just stop washing your hands like sinergy and julia.
You will be immune to everything.

asubmissiveheart -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/18/2007 4:26:37 AM)

mistofern, I don't think the government is doing much at all to regulate
our food supply.
All you can do is take precautions.

Is that what I said? No, it is not what I said. Why the need to be snotty? Does it feel good or something? And if this was an attempt at humor, it missed

Actually Julia, I believe you said you do wash your hands all the time when your "out and about"

Anyway, back to the topic. I have been told (I don't know for sure) that people in most other countries like countries in Africa and places, do not have things like allergies and stuff. If this is true perhaps it's because they are more exposed to things. It's definatly something to think about.

I can't stand it when I take my UM to the doctor, and they automatically try to put him on an antibiotic.

This is a receipt for an epidemic. If we over medicate, how will we cope when (or if) the super flu pops up?

Vendaval -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/18/2007 1:57:27 PM)

Gack!  I remember the "mystery meat" from the school lunches.
I always got sick off the stuff.  We had an open campus for the
high school so I either brought my own or went across the street
to Jack in the Box.  Not great, but at least edible.

Not ever going to eat something again that comes shrink-wrapped
in plastic tubes and just labeled "Meat - Grade C"!  [:'(]
