Do Y/you think there is any meaningful difference between Democrats and Republicans?  Are Y/you registered as a party member so Y/you can vote in the primaries?  Do Y/you think W/we need (or will ever have) an Independent 3rd party that better represents U/us in the Executive and Legislative Branches?

Here's my opinion:  the parties' themselves have different platforms, but their members have become hard to distinguish between.  This country seems to be run by a lunatic and the results of polls, so politicians can change their positions as the wind blows.

i doubt a viable third party will emerge; it's possible a candidate or candidates may splinter off from the herd and speak their minds.  However, they will have a tough time getting elected.

W/we can vote; W/we have to accept some of the responsibility for the sorry state of affairs O/ourselves.

If we didn't have one party wearing two masks (to keep the sheeple voting against 'them'), it would be neccesary to invent one.

I think that people are starting to wake up to that fact and they're getting pissed!
By registration, the Constitution Party is now the third largest Political Party and has grown tremendously in the last few years!
I will probably vote for the CP candidate for President in 2008.
We really do need CHANGE in this country and we sure won't get it with Dems or Repubs!

I basically considered the Republic party and the Democratic party to be the same, with a slight leaning towards the Republics, until 1994. Ever since then, I have voted straight Democratic party ticket.

I am registered as an Independent, and under California law, that lets me vote in one party's primary. I will be casting my vote for Ron Paul.

Mana, I like Ron Paul too!
If he makes it to the primary I'll vote for him.
He used to be a Libertarian. Very smart guy, M.D. and has a lot of great ideas and believes in the Constitution- something that's very rare in Washington these days!
Go into Vote.com, he's First in votes, 56%!

I think there are some fundimental differences between the two parties, but unfortunately what both parties have in common is that the elected representatives for both parties tend to vote for what is good for their individual party instead of what is good for the people. I don't know that there will ever be a viable third party.  I often wish for a third or fourth option on who to vote for, but if a third party gains enough power and representation to be a real contender i wonder if it would not end up like the other two.  I know there are exceptions, but as a rule if a person is going to have any real hope of being elected they need the backing of their party, and to get that backing they have to vote party politics.

There are many times that i might like a third party candidate, but when i vote i have to look at whether that person has any real chance to win.  All too often they don't.  By voting for them when i think they don't really have a chance to win it takes a vote away from one of the other candidates that does have a chance to win.  If enough people end up voting for the third party candidate and take their vote away from one of the other two it probably allows the very least desireable of the three candidates to win since he (or she) will be the most different from that third party candidate that you would have liked to vote for.  Voting for a third party candidate just to show discontent with the other two parties is very likely to put the least desireable person into office.

Igor, that's like saying, "do you want a broken arm or a broken leg?"
I don't want either!

But if you vote for a broken finger you may end up with a broken back.

If you vote for someone that has almost no chance to win then you are not likely to get what you vote for anyway, and you will quite possible allow the person you like least to be put in office.

And so you endeavor to elect the lesser of two evils instead of the candidate you really want, just like millions of other voters.

IMO, this just guarantees another victory for the PTB and status-quo defenders, and another loss for those who seek real change.

That's what the two "Big Box" partys want you to think!
We need to quit banging our heads on the wall.
It'll feel good when we stop!
I don't care if I'm the only person who votes for a particular candidate.
People will look at the results and say "Hmmm."

Igor2003:
I would disagree.  If your choices are a broken arm or a broken leg  and you vote for a blow job and blow job looses then only broken arm or  broken leg can  win...broken back was not on the list.  You would at least know in your mind that you had voted for what you really wanted.
What is worse voting for what you want and not getting it or voting for what you do not want and getting it?

There are differences between the parties, on extreme hot-button issues like Abortion and Gun Control, and both parties have intractable positions that they cannot compromise on.

As far as the function and form of our governance, both parties have been too long where they are, and both have become slaves to a system of money and favor-trading, rather than attempting to govern the populace with reason, debate, and ethics. The power-brokers of both parties maintain the status-quo for the fear that they will loose those things that appeal to their baser instincts.

Dauric.
