Last week I came across this concept that interest for BDSM relationship should exist in different people with different back grounds, but I have never seen a doctor or a university professor attends in this sort of discussions. My be if they do, they never reveal their identity because they ashamed of their sexual bizarre tendency.

My question is that if this is the way it should to be?

Should some people hide their desire for specific life style and only think that pole dancers and porn stars should express their sexual desire?

Have you ever seen any high profile person to attend any BDSM venues or shows in public their desire as a slave or dominant?

I'm not sure if I'd consider a Doctor or a professor to be high profile... but I don't see why they'd not want to go do the fun things in their town.

I know a doctor and a professor on this site who are fairly active. I'm not sure if they go to events, but they don't try and hide their BDSM needs.

The degree to which people are "self-actualized" is often positively correlated with their open acceptance and embrace of their nature, be it Dom or sub... however, the degree to which they advertise it is directly related to the fact that other human beings are very often ignorant (literally meaning "not knowing,"), and fear what they do not understand... therefore, "proceed with caution" is a very good mantra, and also to share in a general fashion about what one has done, what happened, and what one reflects on the said experiences now.

Well having thought of being a university professor but now deciding if I want to commit to the 6 or more year PhD for my field of study.  I have to say that most academics that I know pretty much cover the range of sexual/relationship desires. And on average say a lot of sexual things which would fall under BDSM, but most of these things are found in history.

I’m not personally out at public events mostly due to the lack of time.  I don’t think people are hiding their desires they just have other things which are of focus in their lives. If you have a time consuming job that only leaves you with a little free time you might not be spending it always at public events going “I’m so and so.”

My ex is about to get her PHd and she is kinky as hell.  San Francisco is full of perverted doctors and there isn't a nurse out there who isn't a top or a bottom.  Dr Charles Moser is well a doctor and a well known author of BDSM books.

Race Bannon started the kink aware professionals list but NCSF runs it now.  It lists all sorts of "professionals"  http://www.ncsfreedom.org/kap/mainlist.htm

"raises hands" I'm not a full-time professor yet but I'll get my PhD this fall and I do teach course at the college level and have for several years.

But my field is ancient history so the only time I really mention this is when history stuff comes up (I admit to being a total bitch then), when people talk about their work/careers, or the monthly check-ins on the Mistress forum.

I might be spoiled hanging in the DC and NYC city scenes, because they have lawyers and doctors all over the place- and who give regular presentations.

I dated a very delicious one for awhile too :)

I'm not sure what you mean by high profile?  The one that comes to mind is Deegan and his crew in NYC but they flit in and out from what I know.

I think a chunk of it might be time- it takes a fair amount of leisure time and liquid income to be an active part of the public scene in an ongoing basis.

My name is Machele Kindle, something I've already revealed having published a lifestyle book under my given name and clearly relating it to Master Fire (both names appear on the cover). I am in the field of physics education (in particular demos and labs) at one University during the day and also teach at the University level as a second job. I'm returning to school to get my PhD so I can teach at this level full time.

I know many people who are fairly high profile such as Viola Johnson and Catherine Gross. Granted, they're high profile within the lifestyle, but both are easily found online and/or in print. If you're looking for someone famous in the vanilla world, I'd be betting that they don't participate in local vanilla events for the same reason they don't go to a public gym: they'd get harrassed. They're probably also aware that fans or the paparazzi would follow them and out EVERYone.

Master Fire

i have known many people of such..."caliber"..if you want to put it that way. its just  a matter of discretion because certain career fields wouldnt exactly look highly upon this.

I think BDSM interests can be found in all walks of life and professions.  Many that are in the public eye may not want to be outed for fear of risking their jobs or reputations. We have had professors and doctors post on these boards.

I have also met many people who are what many consider high profile.

One feels as I do - be descret but do not lie about our chosen lifestyle.  They have also testified in family court to show that this lifestyle can be lived and not harm children.

This reminded me of the time i took an intensive all day french class over the summer in a college near SF and the professor came to class everyday wearing black, most of the time some kind of leather and he always had chains dangling from parts of his clothing. His questions on the tests would have the words in french "sadomastique" etc and i would have to read them a couple of time wondering if what i was reading was in fact being said.  It certainly got my attanetion and made me wonder - he was very out but at the time i had no clue about bdsm but i had an idea he was definately into sado masochistic activities lol , i just had a hard time believing he was so open about it.

Tell me cyber, do many people you are introduced to say; "Hi, my name is Bob. My girlfriend I enjoy anal sex."? Conversely, many "professionals" attend discussions and events but don't have their business title next to their name on their 'Hello-my name is...' labels.

When you meet people you talk and find out they are Doctors, Lawyers, bank Presidents. They are there with truck drivers, waitresses, stay at home moms/dads, and everything in between. In NYC I used to see second tier 'stars' of stage and screen as well as local politicians. I probably see them in LA too, but I'm too out of touch with current popular culture. They aren't there to announce their profession and provide a beacon of inspiration. They are there to have fun, enjoy the atmosphere, partake in the party.

Ashamed? Hardly. I don't have the best opinion of the legal industry, however I do sympathize with anyone who announces at a party, vanilla or flavored, they are an attorney. Once they do they are commonly bothered the rest of the night with 'legal' questions. "Hey Bob, my neighbor's tree limb fell on my kids tricycle; can I sue him for the trauma it caused?" Imagine having the question posed to you while strapped on a spanking bench while having your ass caned?

Some people have very good reasons for not informing even the kink community about their professions. Not just politicians have to be careful. Think what would happen to a pastor/priest or seminary professor who admitted to being kinky. They would have no voice whatsoever within their religious community any longer where they might be able to amelliorate some of the negatives being spouted by others.

You never know what kind of professional you are sitting next to at any event.

As well as laying themselves wide open for blackmail or being outed to the local press.
I know one guy who is an ex government worker that was blackmailed for three years and lost a considerable amount of money because a work collegue got wind of what he did in his leisure time.
I know a female charity worker that was recently outed to the press by some vindictive person who happened to know her business. The headlines went something like ‘ Charity worker likes to drink her own urine out of a dog bowl’. She obviously lost her job. Her children got spat on in the street and she has basically had to go into hiding.
If the press get a bit of juicy information on someone high profile or someone that will make a good story then they will use it.

People have a right to privacy and people have a right to protect themselves. This has nothing to do with shame but all to do with not destroying ones career.
