Spark . com is a good place.  They have online exersize videos for you to exersize with, a place where you can set some realistic goals and check your progress, and a whole recipe section with good sounding food in it.  [;)]

You have to enroll, but it's free, and the website sends daily or weekly tips to your email box if you want.

Well, here's what worked for me: I don't use a car to get to and from work.  I use a pair of inline speed skates.  With better-than-average bearings, I can do approximately 20mph steady (on a level surface; more if downhill, less if uphill).  With resistance training bearings, I can do about 12-15mph steady.  With racing bearings, I can do about 25mph steady, or short sprints of up to a little over 30mph if there are no headwinds.

With normal bearings, it takes me about 50 minutes each way.  That, coupled with no eating within 2 hours of the time I go to bed, and limiting my daily calorie intake, has helped me shed over 25 pounds in about 4 months while gaining a great deal of lower body muscle mass.  Not to mention, due to the rollerblading, I don't suffer from WMA. *grins*  Some people don't like skating, but if you do, you may want to try it out.

P.S.  They get amazing gas mileage, too.

I've followed the South Beach plan for over 3 years, lost 38 lbs in the first 5 months and have maintained it. The plan works by keeping your blood sugars even throughout the day which prevents sweet and starch cravings and helps prevent hunger. It's not low fat or low carb. You avoid all added sugars, flours that are not whole grains, and trans fats; you limit saturated fats; eat plenty of low fat protein, lots of veggies, some fruit, whole grains and low fat dairy. It allows for occasional indulgences.  It is very easy to follow for a lifetime. Now i follow it for my health, hoping to prevent diabetes and heart disease, which is why the diet was originally developed. I also frequent a South Beach message board for support, advice and recipes, and find that very helpful.

Good luck with whatever plan you choose, but keep in mind you will most likely gain back whatever you lose and then some if you don't follow a maintenance plan.

you must be very careful when following a high protein diet. My sister lost a small back street boy off her rear end... my girlfried developed serious kidney complications. It does work but sometimes it may cost more than the benefits

People with kidney issues BEFORE low carbing can exacerbate their kidney issues if they don't hydrate properly and already have problems with assimilating protein.  They can also exacerbate their kidney issues by eating a high carb diet and not seeking medical attention for their existing problem.

People with no serious pre-existing health conditions requiring special dietary or medical attention can live on a nearly zero carb diet forever with no ill health effects.  There are several indigenous peoples who do this year round because plant life other than lichen is extremely limited or nonexistent in their geographical range, and a much larger number of indigenous peoples (really all of them that are not actively agricultural) live in seasonal ketosis.  The Kekwick and Pawan studies demonstrated that ancestry and genetics was not the determining factor in why the Inuit and other native groups remained perfectly healthy while eating literally nothing but meat and fat for years on end.

Homo sapiens is a remarkably adaptive animal.

It's a terrific site, D; it's helped me get a clear picture of what I'm actually putting in my body every day.

To the OP: Well you've been given lots of diet advice here, most of it sound enough - but the 12 hour days you mention can be a real killer on the exercise front, sooooo... if you can't actually spend a chunk of dedicated time for a workout most days, then try these things instead and you'll be surprised at how much they can help.

  • Take transit instead of a car, if you don't already, and provided it wont turn a 15 min car ride into a 2 hour bus ride (not good for stress!). Walking to and from the transit stops - always good.
  • Take the stairs at work. If you have to go up 5 floors and are totally winded by one flight, then start with that and work up. Same goes if you're in an apartment building.
  • If you have anywhere decent to walk, then go do it on your lunch, coffee breaks. Even better if you can find a buddy to go with you.
  • If you insist on watching certain TV programs in the evening (like the 6 pm news) - get a stationary bike or something and peddle while you watch - even 20 mins is useful.
  • Eat breakfast!

And one other bit of dietary advice: eat small controlled portions. North Americans have got so used to the "giant piled-high plate or I haven't had my fill" syndrome, that they tend to forget that half of it isn't necessary. Good luck, and if you fall off the wagon then there are lots of folks here who will give you a pep talk to get you back on it!!

minnetar -> RE: weight loss (5/19/2007 6:15:18 PM)

i would make sure that your fat content is less than 30% of your total calorie intake.  Multiply the fat grams times 9 then divide that number by total calories to find that out.

See if you can find 30 minutes a day to just walk.  That exercise is sufficient enough.

If anyone is really serious about loosing weight and as a sidebar benefit improving their overall health, I would strongly suggest checking out "The Zone Diet".  It is a lifestyle enhancement program developed by Dr. Barry Sears primarily for athletes, which focuses on a diet based on a balance of protein, carbs and fats determined by each individuals unique needs and goals. The results are tremendous. It is easy to follow and meals can be purchased at any grocery store. Not being much of a cook it has been no problem finding a variety of different meals to put in the microwave. If you are into cooking or have someone to cook for he also publishes companion cookbooks with some really good and easy reciepes in them. Following the program for almost 4 years now I have lost and kept off over 65lbs. and have reached a level of conditioning that I haven`t been at for years. It really is unbelievable and one of the best programs I`ve come across. Include an exercise program with it and just watch the results.

sublimelysensual -> RE: weight loss (5/19/2007 8:25:25 PM)

Swimming is excellent exercise since you have a pool available. It gives a cardio workout as well as improving pretty much every muscle group in your body. The key to it is getting and keeping your heart rate at a target level, ie, not stopping at the end of the pool every length or lap, and keeping up the intensity. You can also get a variety of equipment pretty cheaply to keep it interesting, ie, kickboards, hand paddles, waterproof radios/radio covers, etc etc. Another fun way to keep it interesting is to invest in a waterproof watch and try to beat your own times, there are also a lot of different drills. I'd be happy to talk to you more about it, just give me a shout if you're interested, I coached a team for about 4 years...

Find what works for you. I have lost 130 pounds since August of 2005. I will lose 30 to 40 more pounds. Various things have worked at various times. When my body gets used to things, I make changes.

I agree with HisSongstress!!!! Find what works for you read read and read some more!  Having said that, I have lost and gained weight over the years a lot.  All the plans worked only I could  not do it anymore.   I knew that I had to do something to keep living.   I also knew it had to be something I could do one day at a time for the rest of my life.   Thank God for the internet.  I use Spark.com  Lean Cuisine Ediets and several other sites combined.  I like the old message, take what you can use and leave the rest.   Since January 2006 I have lost 105 lbs and my teenage son lost 100 as well.  We just decided to start trying to eat healthier.   My son is thin as can be looks great and enjoying his life more than ever.  I still have more to go but I have found a way to eat that does not require any special foods  nor makes me feel left out. That is were the internet helps almost any place you care to eat these days have calorie counts online ... with a little planning before you go you can eat out anywhere .. and still enjoy your life.

Best of luck to you and try to remember you did not put it on overnight and you won't lose it overnight.

EvaLass -> RE: weight loss (5/19/2007 9:23:45 PM)

I have lost 45 pounds in the last 2.5 years. It never works to do anything drastic. You will feel deprived. I find that small treats can help me stay on a weight loss regimen.
Here is some time-tested advice: make sure you get 25 grams of fiber a day; fiber helps immensely in weight loss. Beans are an especially good source of fiber and have other nutrients too. Oatmeal is also a good source of fiber, and if you cut up a couple of strawberries or add some blueberries and a hint of sugar, you have a great breakfast. You can buy high-fiber breads, too. Drink plenty of water. It helps to keep you feeling full. Eat high volume foods such as fruits and vegetables. They have more water in them than other foods and can help you feel full. Eat many small meals during the day. That keeps your blood sugar up and keeps your energy from flagging. Do not allow yourself to get hungry because you will overeat later. Pack nutrition bars in your pocketbook when you are on the go. Consider jump starting your diet with Slimfast or another liquid diet. You can drink it once or twice a day on alternate weeks for the first month of your diet. I found liquid diets when used carefully and moderation can really help cut the calories. Start small. If you typically eat a bag of potato chips at lunch, eat half a bag. Do some moderate exercise such as walking. Even a little walking will burn some calories and help you lose. If you fall off the wagon, don't punish yourself. Everybody has days when they eat more than other days. Just get up the next day and start again. Enjoy life. Don't deny yourself something that you REALLY want. If you are dying for Hagen Daz ice cream and you have been on a diet for a month and lost some weight, have a scroop of ice cream. I lost the first 30 pounds by cutting out candy bars and soft drinks. The next 15 pounds I lost by cutting portions. I still ate my favorite foods but in smaller quantities. Now, I have between 20 to 30 left to lose. I have given up cream and sugar in my coffee, sweets, potato chips and other jumk foods. I eat smaller portions. My main treat is a one-half cup of non fat yogurt mixed with a cup of frozen cherries, lime juice, and two teaspoons of sugar. It has protein, carbohydrates, and fiber and gives me a great energy boost in the afternoon or evening. It is also delicious!

Thank you.

I have considered starting a thread ....somewhere here... as a venue to "support" (I know, a bad word) one another in weight adjustment issues. (I am thinking something similar to the Gor girl support thread.) A place to discuss successes and challenges...with no flaming from those that are comfortable with the current status of their bodies.

Yes, I know this is covered on all those other sites. But, there are some kink issues related to weight that I just can't forum about on vanilla sites.

I am so impressed that this thread has not been degenerative.

Every time I see your avatar, I want to stand up and either salute or burst into song!  I haven't lost that much weight but I've certainly turned some fat into muscle mass and, like so many others on this thread, I feel great!  Clothes fit better and I look better.  I think no matter what diet plan the OP chooses, she's GOT to add exercise.  Yes, it's hard, especially with those kinds of hours, but find 10 minutes chunks during the day and do some isometrics.

salilus -> RE: weight loss (5/20/2007 5:55:23 AM)

I follow my own very, very loose translation of this diet:
http://www.zoneliving.com/ZoneLiving/QuickStartGuide/tabid/61/Default.aspx

Basically, I eat tons vegetables, a little protein and very little fat unless it's monounsaturated... and as few starchy carbs as possible (bagels and bread and pasta, etc) I exercise a lot (walking about 15 miles a week, 20 minutes a day on a stair machine, and sit ups and light weights a couple times a week) and that helps very much. I also allow myself to 'mess up.' I will occasionally have a little ice cream or my favourite sort of cake or something like that. It happens once a week or so and it's in moderation. It's kept me on the diet long enough to help turn it into a way of living better, rather than a diet. Meaning, I'll eat like this for the rest of my life... I'll just add a little more protein and such back into my diet when I'm down to the right weight.

I used to use fitday ( http://www.fitday.com ) to keep track of what i ate and the exercise I did.

I'm lost over 100 lbs, slowly and carefully.

Littlepita -> RE: weight loss (5/20/2007 6:13:07 AM)

Way to go on the weight loss Salilus!!

I'm pretty much doing South Beach. I think it's about the most sensible. I was doing Atkins and wasn't losing and felt lousy. I went to a nutritionist who told me my calorie count was too low and I wasn't eating enough good carbs. So, I've upped my daily calorie count and upped my exercise. So far so good!!
