I would feel fairly safe is saying anything that shows respect is "proper", but again, some caution here as Dominants/Owners can vary so much in what they expect. You simply have to learn, and just outright asking is usually OK, of what the Dominant/Owner wants. Personally, something as simple as a response such as "yes Sir" or addressing me as "Master" is adequate, while others may go to extremes either direction. Be perceptive and observant...you will find what works.
