I sympathize!  I'm "instructionally challenged" when it comes to assembly directions...it doesn't help that whoever does the instructions and drawings has to be a sadist.
I have to rebuild a falling-down back porch/deck (was promised help, but am not counting on it much) within the next month, and if it's just stable, I'll be surprised.  (I helped build a deck 23 years ago, but I've slept since then...)

Assume that assembling anything you buy is going to be a pain in the ass.  Spread out your parts and pieces in a place where they won't disappear.  Take inventory.  Read the directions all the way through before you start.  Have the tools you'll need handy.

Manufacturer matters too, Hunkboy.  I've had good experiences putting together products from Sauter Woodworking.  For the love of God though, don't lose the allen wrench!!!

I got tired of cutting the ends off the allen wrenches so I could use them in my cordless drill that I bought an enormous set of screwdriver bits for allen heads, phillips heads, those box heads, regular screwdriver heads, etc.

Ikea, I dare you to forget to include the allen wrench!
