And sometimes we just have to laugh at ourselves. I am not being cruel or mean here, but seriously, what's so bad about laughing at yourself ?
For example.... let's say I make a typo, you quote my mistyped words and make a " funny" double entendre with my mistake. Some would say you are being mean, some would say you are being funny. Do any of us really know what your motivation was? No, we don't, only you do. If I get all pissy and say " you are a big fat meanie", and you defend yourself, saying you were just joking, you get attacked by the folks who think you were mean and the ones who actually believe you will play along with you.
OTOH,  I respond to your double entendre with a witty comeback or a simple. yeppers, I am a shitty typist, but I give a great blow job. Game Over !

Conflict resolution at it's finest.

edited to add: there is another option in which when the " funny" person says s/he was being funny, take them at thier word and just say " Ohh, I didn't realize that, carry on " or " my mistake".  It's Ok to be wrong too. Sometimes we take ourselves far to seriously.

There is nothing wrong with laughing at one’s self, I do it on a daily basis, many times a day.

I think my intent would be fairly clear if you said, “That hurt my feelings.”, and I kept going, or if I apologized and stopped. Don’t you?

I’ve got to say, I don’t believe everyone was/is playing. I also feel now would be a good time to point out, I was not defending anybody. The whole reason I made my first post way back on page… somewhere between 8-10… is because I knew exactly why the OP was being made in the first place.

It is almost always the same, they say something that offends someone or the masses, the second respond, and the first person “freaks”.

My original intent was to provide useful information to prevent that from happening.

As far as what transpired after that, well, if they had listened, none of that would have happened. I just thought that if what was said was really meant as a joke, then it might be useful to know, many perceive a joke as being funny to everyone involved.

If not, so be it.
