I heard this joke the other day and whilst I think I get it a mate of mine heard it and thought it was great so now I'm not so sure because I only found it to be an okay joke:

"Don't expect everyone to love you at first perhaps you're like the first oral thermometer, people were glad not to have to use rectal ones anymore but were still quite weary of putting them in their mouths".

Is there something I missed?
