Jack45 -> U.S. ambassador apologizes for remarks on convicted spy Pollard (5/22/2007 6:32:43 AM)

There was a time that America was top dog, never acted the way it does today, this is typical of the weaklings running the show, no wonder the nation is in shape it is today.
U.S. ambassador apologizes for remarks on convicted spy Pollard
quote:

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Richard Jones has apologized for remarks on convicted spy Jonathan Pollard, and said that they did not reflect his personal views, nor those of the Bush administration.

Jones called the comments "misinformed and misleading."

Jones told a university conference earlier in the day that the United States had been lenient with Pollard as it did not execute him for spying for Israel.

Pollard, a civilian intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy, was convicted of selling military secrets to Israel while working at the Pentagon. He was arrested in 1985 and pleaded guilty at his trial. He is serving a life sentence in a U.S. federal prison.

An Israeli political official said Israel would continue to work for Pollard's release.

However, Pollard's wife, Esther, said Jones' apology was insufficient. She said Jones made false charges against her husband. "Unless there is a specific retraction and correction, we simply must regard the apology was incomplete at best or insincere at worst," she said.

I'm confused, why should Pollard have even been charged? He was obeying a 1983 treaty between the US and Israel on sharing of intelligence that the US governemnt was itself violating.

Even if he was should have been charged he plead guitly to the sole count of espionage. Rather than getting the usual sentence of 2 to 4 years he instead got life in violation of his plea bargain. That is the same sentence Aldrich Ames got for commiting treason and passing secrets to the USSR which resulted in the deaths of at least 11 US agents.

Sounds like a traitor to me.

"According to Eric Margolis in the Toronto Sun, Pollard provided Israel with the names of American agents in the Soviet Union. Margolis also alleges that the names were later traded to the Soviet Union by Israel and a number of key CIA agents were executed as a result [7]. Seymour Hersh in The New Yorker claims that "a number of officials strongly suspect that the Israelis repackaged much of Pollard's material and provided it to the Soviet Union in exchange for continued Soviet permission for Jews to emigrate to Israel" and that "a significant percentage of Pollard's documents, including some that described the techniques the American Navy used to track Soviet submarines around the world, was of practical importance only to the Soviet Union." [8]

Just more reasons why he is an expensive chip in the game they play.  That is why he got life I suspect so there would be lots of time to negotiate

Didn't the Japanese (Toshiba) sell some of the U.S. stealth submarine secrets to the Russians also.  All the government did to them was a fine and a restriction on some of their contracts.

I agree. You are not going to find many more people who support US/Israeli as much asI do but I also think the US has been more than lienent with him.

Pollard not only sold to the Israelis but massive amounts to red China as well.

He should never see his freedom.

I remember when I got my security clearance for special access.  (dont ask, I wont tell)

In the briefing it listed a bunch of countries considered risks to the United States national security.

U.S.S.R.
China
Iraq
Iran
North Korea
Libya
Isreal
...

What the fuck?

I am happy you support Isreal, might want to spend some time convincing the people who determine countries hostile to our national security that Isreal is a good thing for the United States.

Yes, they did.  The penalties weren't severe enough imo, but it's much easier to prosecute a bird in the hand than one in the bush:

http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/archive/r0604/48r04/48r04.asp

"Because of the scandal, two executives at Toshiba Machine were arrested and several others resigned. The president of Toshiba, then Sugichiro Watari, publicly apologized. The U.S. Senate voted to ban the import of Toshiba products for three years, and Watari and the chairman of Toshiba resigned. "
