ORIGINAL: Focus50 Sure, I work in what's loosely termed the metal trades and its come in very handy for building my own toys and devices. *Every* job has its fringe benefits.... lol Just curious if working in nursing does actually make you "safer". I'm not doubting your skill, ethic or dedication etc, I'm thinking more along the lines that if it's something you're conditioned to do virtually all the time, doesn't that make for days when over confidence leads to the odd second of carelessness - as is human to do...? Really not looking for a "blue" (blew? = fight) here, just curious. I'm working on the fairly common circumstance that many an auto mechanic seems to drive a rattly ole smoke belchin' bomb for personal transport.... lol Focus. Hi ya Focus. Well as for making me safer? No. Being safe rests on being intelligent. Did I gain a skill or two as I took the ride through nursing school? Yes. Could I have learned said skills from any profiecient dominant who engages in those things? Absolutely. Sterile Technique, needles, catheters, enemas can all be taught. Families do these things in their home with sick family members all the time...sometimes BETTER than their home health nurses because they have been doing it so long for their beloved family member. I can't recall ever feeling like I was going through a motion with something that requires my brain to function while working as a nurse. Even for the patient I've given the same meds to for the last 4 years I check each and every med. If I just pop the pills out of the cards into a cup without paying much attention to the drugs I risk things like: the pharmacy sending the wrong dose, a nurse before me putting another patient's card in the wrong spot, or maybe the patient exhibits a symptom that makes me know I should "hold" a certain dose of something. Every single pill every single card of pills is checked and before I even pop out the pills to give, I assess my patient. I have an example for almost any "task" in nursing you can give me. Those who do go through the motions are the ones that you, your family and friends complain about later. Hope that helps.
