EvaLass -> Defining a Troll? (5/23/2007 1:57:56 PM)

I have been a member of this site for a couple of weeks. I receive all kinds of inquiries, but most of them are respectful. I have noticed references to "trolls" and I wondered how the rest of you define a troll. Is that someone who is randomly sending out emails without regard to whether they might actually have anything in common with the person (whether Dom or submissive) that they are writing? Some people just seem misguided or unable to make good judgments. Or, are there other connotations to the word "troll?"

My pet peeve is people who email me and when look at their profile I find they have written only one or two sentences. Unless the person is a genius and can capture themselves in a few powerful words, it is very difficult to know if you could be interested in them. So, you ask for additonal information, but little is forthcoming.

Not complaining, though. I have met some great people on CM including an awesome sister submissive who has counseled me by telephone, invited me out to meet people in my local area, and gotten my head screwed on straight enough that I can play safe and protect myself. And, I have been in communication with some potential play partners that I am looking forward to meeting.

Cheers, everybody. Play safe.

Your first definition was good enough.  Someone who drags through websites and chat rooms and forums and follows along after every little lead they find just trying to get any sort of response they can.

As always, don't expect anyone online to share any of your values.  Be happily surprised when they do.

I completely agree with LA. (She makes things so easy sometimes)

Your quote doesn't relate to trolls but it is an eloquent statement. I agree with it totally.

slaverosebeauty -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/23/2007 2:45:06 PM)

Definiations of troll vary, I have a list of about I think I am up to about 40 or 50 things that can qualify someone as a troll, once I reached my 500th person {upt ot OVER 1500 at last count} I had blocked, I had to make a list to define troll for myself {thanks to friends my definition has become more specific}. The definitons above are decent [vague], I am more specific; however YOU want to define troll is what matters. I went back and looked at what the word 'troll' really meant, not just someone who wanders around trying to cause trouble.

My advice, ignore trolls and those who don't have common sence. They are a dime a dozen.

consequently - for those who may be interested, a copy of 'you might be a troll if' is avaliable, just email me.

EvaLass -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/23/2007 2:56:29 PM)

I try to answer nearly all of the the emails that I receive. I recognize that some people may be very different than I am but they deserve respect. I am now up in the air about whether I should bother to respond if someone is clearly trolling or if they are providing inadequte information. People who really want to make a connection are going to give you at least some helpful information. It takes time and energy to respond to people. Why not spend energy on those people who are doing a responsible job of communicating with you?

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/23/2007 2:58:35 PM)

It's your choice.  For me, someone sending me an email leaves me with NO obligation to respond in any way.  As Katy so rightly says "No response IS a response"

But you do what you want...just don't get annoyed when you deal with your choice.

slaverosebeauty -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/23/2007 4:40:38 PM)

If someone CLEARY has NOT read your profile, then why waste your time responding to them? Trolls are a waste of time, my favorite button is 'delete', if I am in a 'mood' I will torment them, just for kicks.

After email 200 or so, of bs, you will either keep responding to EVERY email or you will delete the trollmail.

Definitions are great when it comes to concrete things, but the problem appears when you start applying definitions to people. You're always going to come up against an exception. Also someone may appear to meet all the criteria but for different reasons than you imagine.

A troll to me isn't a person, but an act, a behaviour as it were. It's the act of someone (for whatever reason) spamming other people's profiles, ignoring what is written in the profile, or deliberately misinterpreting what is written on the profile.

I guess you can extend this definition to the person if you wish, if you assume that this person is trolling through habit - but how can you say for sure? And is it really important what that person does habitually anyway?

It's like we call someone who steals something from a shop a shoplifter. I see it more as someone who has resorted to shoplifting for whatever reason unless I have evidence that this person habitually steals from shops, then I would extend the definition. Otherwise to me this person is someone who is shoplifting.

I take people at face value, I regard everyone as an individual and therefore I treat each individual message or e-mail separately and either respond to it or not on the basis of how much or how little interest it arouses in me. If I'm interested I will respond. If I'm not, then I'm not, and I will either ignore and delete the message or reply with a polite refusal. Once I have deleted the message or replied, that person ceases to exist in my mind.

I tend to reply to all messages received unless they are way off the mark, abusive, insulting or crude. I even respond to scammers from Nigeria, I tell them to send the money and I'll open the account, but they never do.

littleone35 -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/24/2007 7:56:56 AM)

I must agree with what others say.  To me a troll is someone who sends out lots of e mail without reading profiles in hopes he will get a nibble.

They can be a lot of fun to play with though. Feeding them back the kind of stuff they send you. "Hi" "Hi". "Wanna play" "Maybe". "Do you have yahell?" "Yes". That kind of thing can be a riot if I'm in the right mood.

bliss1 -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/24/2007 11:33:21 AM)

A troll - someone who can not read a profile and be specific in their message.

MstrssPassion -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/24/2007 11:51:41 AM)

when you want to know the definition, look it up

http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/troll.htm (this one is pretty cool)

http://www.hyphenologist.co.uk/killfile/anti_troll_faq.htm (this one reads like a tutorial)

From http://www.urbandictionary.com/
Troll: One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument

From http://teladesign.com/ma-thesis/glossary.html

lilprincess25 -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/26/2007 2:31:54 AM)

to me a troll is somone who is trying to find a playmate any where.

i ran a group on yahoo and had a NO TROLLING policy.  actually had to nail some Dom's for it.  which they tried putting that it wasn't in the rules.

i made it clear my group wasn't for looking for playmates it was a place were Dom's and subs could come together and exchange idea's.

to me thats a troll

lilprincess25 -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/26/2007 2:36:10 AM)

and i agree with the above responses

Suleiman -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/26/2007 1:23:20 PM)

A Troll is a heavy-set man in his mid-thirties with long red hair, standing over six feet tall, with poor hygene, whose motto is "Larger Than Life and Twice As Ugly". All others are but pale imitations.

Laura -> RE: Defining a Troll? (5/26/2007 8:51:22 PM)

A troll is anyone who could just as easily use a blow up doll instead of a real Domme.

You'll get a lot more spam that way. Once they know they have a real/ active email they add it to lists which they sell.
