Two stories on tonight's news on Channel 4 here in the UK

Story 1; the plight of Iraqi interpreters formerly employed by the British army, who have fled as refugees because of death threats against them from insurgents. Now living frightened in refugee camps in neighbouring countries, our "protection" on the ground in Iraq having proven worthless, our government is not prepared to offer them anything by way of safe haven here - despite the work they have done for us, at great personal risk and at risk to their families. It would be unfair to allow them any special treatment I understand.

Story 2; three guys under "supervision orders" whereby they must report to a police station every morning because they are known to be involved in terrorist activity but cannot for some reason be prosecuted, are on the run and may have left the country to go and fight the British army in Iraq. It had been judged unfair to allow the authorities to keep them either in gaol or under house arrest, even though they are known to be a threat to national security.

WTF!?

We have good guys being treated with disdain and contempt, whilst bad guys are being treated with the greatest sensitivity and care. Our friends are discarded, in favour of every possible resource being devoted to not offending our sworn enemies.

It seems to me, that we have everything arse backwards. No wonder so many outside the UK want a British passport, and so many who have one already would like to leave.

Lady E., I have come to enjoy your posts!

Here in the US dozens of interpreters were fired, due to being gay. These interpreters- were fluent in mid east linguistics.

Who cares what a person does in bed! [ between adults i mean]

when getting a root canal i have no interest in that guys sex life. jsut his competence to do the job for which i had hired him 4.

i love to compare notes with folks outside the US, quite frankly we need eachother now more then ever.

Also-- I wanna add, we in the US get a wayy differnet version of the news then those folks outside the US. we get arrogant soundbiites with no regard to historical perspective- just that- wave the flag and go shopping! and now "stuff" is so avaikle it is baggage.  "stuff" cant be happiness. we have reached new heights in gluttony.

also= i thought the 06 election in the US was a bold statement- that the status quo was not what we teh people want.  i see very little resolve. all i see is mudslinging.

rather sickening. as my late dad used to say- " two wrongs dont make a right"

arghhhhhhhhh!  the whole notion of governance is a mockery. the civilized world is hanging by a thread.  send in the troops for big oil profits.  whose blood is spilled?  lots.

we are doing what we accused the Soviets of doing =and worse.

and we need a goverment, why??  lets ask the Katrina folks.

Maybe the interpreters can go and and live in Guantanamo where, it was reported today, the US authorities are having trouble releasing some detainees because nobody wants them and in some countries, Libya was mentioned, they may be tortured he he he he he
It seems the interpreters may at least be safe in Gitmo !!!

Any of CM's tame Liberals got any comments ?

why would anyone have an axe to grind with interpreters?  seems like good communication can only help cohesiveness.

Lady E, that is very poor policy to treat the interpreters
and other Iraqi's who have helped the UK in such a fashion.
They should have special status as political refugees, given
new identities, and relocated to anonymous safe houses in the UK,
along with their families.

I am hardly what anyone would call "tame", seeks;
over the course of years I have been called -
wildcat, hellion, spit-fire, ball of fire, cast-iron bitch,
man-eater and  hell-on-wheels.

It has been a problem for a while now that certain detainees
at Guantanamo Bay are not welcome back in their own
countries.  And it should come as no surprise that some
criminals are not wanted anywhere, you can ask Fidel Castro
about that!

But I fail to see the connection you are trying to make between
the interpreters and the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay???

Please clarify.

Well MsV, tho' I think that Gitmo is a blot on the US policy landscape, it really is amusing to find that some of the detainees are unwanted or may receive even worse treatment elsewhere, particularly in the tolerant peace loving Muslim world. So I just mentioned  the plight of the interpreters to highlight that opinion.

Incidently a Mosque was blown up the other day in.......India. Now there's a surprise !!!!

As for your reputation MsV, I'm full of admiration and apprehension. lol

Silly seeks, I am very liberal in regard to most personal and social
matters.  But that hardly makes me an idiot who thinks that all
Muslims are either completely pacifistic or completely dedicated
to terrorism.  Like any major religion, many Islams are moderates
who are sick of the fighting.

As another example, I have real problems with certain policies
of the Catholic Church.  However; many of my family members
and friends are Catholic and we may or may not agree to disagree
on Church policies or the latest speeches from the current Pope.
When I visit my mum or she visits me, she wants to go to Mass.
I go out of respect for her as my mother but do not take the Eucharist
because that is not my faith and to do so would be highly hypocritical!

Incidently a Mosque was blown up the other day in.......India. Now there's a surprise !!!!

No surprise at all.  India is predominately Hindu and Pakistan
is predominately Muslim.  They have been fighting for years.
See also the hunger strikes of Mahatma Ghandi for more information
on this situation.

As for your reputation MsV, I'm full of admiration and apprehension. lol

You caught me in a very feisty, take-no-bullshit-kind-of-mood today, seeks.
I do take issue with you when you make sweeping statements
about all liberals or any other groups of people being homogenous.

Other than that, you do tend to be either an acquired taste or someone who grows on you, either metaphor indicating rotting food, i.e. grapes or fungi.

So yes, that is a rather back-handed compliment.

Variety, diversity, conflict and communication keep us honest and keep life interesting.
Let's keep life and the discussion board interesting but not volitile, shall we?

MsV please,I thought we were communicating quite nicely. lol
Grapes can be sweet and some fungi produce pleasant dreams.
i know the "rotting" was a mistype. Wasn't it ?

Another point about Islam MsV, many if not all hard core Islamic nations do not tolerate anything like that which is taken for granted in the West. Particularly with regard to religion and sexual diversity.
A well worn argument but one that needs to be born in mind. NO?

And you never told a sibling or playmate that they were just
plain "rotten" or "spoiled rotten" ?  Seems to be a bit of
American slang lost in translation here.  lol

Yes, those types exist and also the hard core Christian extremists, of whom I am very well acquainted, unfortunately.  Both sets of extremists are noted for few if any rights for women, no other religions allowed and no sex except for breeding purposes and all homosexuals damned for etermity.
