Phone training has never been a 'replacement' for real time, in the flesh bdsm for me, but it can be an excellent addition, or way to add a little flavor or spice either to an existing real life relationship or one that is long distance only.
I think the reason I can get off on phone training is because I respond very well to sounds and reactions. Moaning, whimpering, begging, gagging, breathing hard, etc -- those are all things that can be heard over the phone. Then you have begging and pleading. Very hot. If I close my eyes and am in the right mood, the right sub can really get me off.
The thing is, some people can't get past phone because there is always that element of "is he doing what he says he is doing?". I can generally tell when someone is lying, and toys all make specific sounds. But, I will add that a phone sub has to have a very dynamic personality and demeanor (and a hot voice) for it to be ideal.
Also, thanks to the wonders of technology, if you add a digital camera, you can have instant proof that the sub is doing the acts. I also get extremely turned on by visual things; I love pictures and videos of hot men in bondage. If I have my sub do various acts per my command on the phone and then email me photos or .avi files, I'm pretty turned on. Mind you, it's not the same as real life, but it can be damn good. Good foreplay, too --good way to get very hot and turned on before moving on to real life play.
I also was in a 2 year long distance relationship (that led to marriage) and phone play was a big part of that. Some very huge phone bills, a couple of digital cameras and me sending toys out his way....it all led to a nice package. I still have the pictures and videos.
