The story in Genesis was coined well before writing was ever invented. The stories were simplified to be passed down from generation to generation. It was the Sumerians in about 15,000 BC who finally put to "paper" the stories that are now included in Genesis. Anyways, there is some literalism in the Bible, but not all of it is, that is to be certain.. At least much of it is wide open to misinterpretations as you can see.
