I have to think that when that girl gets together with her grandparents (or whatever) the subject sometimes turns to, 'do you remember that hitch-hiker.'
Anybody else a legend among strangers?
Well i only hitchhiked once (in college) but i used to pick up hitchhikers quite often.  i used to travel quite a bit and if i would happen upon someone hitching along the interstate or at rest stops, i'd give 'em a ride.  i look back now and realize how dangerous it was but out of all the times i did it (and nearly every hitcher was a man) i never had one bit of trouble.

i can think of several stories where i think they would remember me as kind of a legend insofar as the level of help i offered them.  i gave one guy a ride from below Richmond, VA to Charleston, WV - several hours.  Another i dropped off at a convenience store and bought him a supply of food, water, and smokes before leaving.  One guy i actually took about an hour or so further than i needed to go.  i just always had a soft spot for someone who was down on his luck and these guys all definitely seemed to be.

Another thing i can think of as far as being a stranger someone would remember involves waitresses - another group i have a tremendous soft-spot for.  There have been a few occasions where i have eaten pretty inexpensive meals at some small restaurant in a town where i didn't know anyone and have left quite a hefty tip for the waitress.  One time i specifically remember was at a Pizza Hut.  My waitress was so nice but she just seemed to be a sad person.  Something just told me to do something nice for her so i left $25 inside of a note that quoted John 3:16.  i thanked her and said "God Bless."  i've done similar things at other places as well.

i like to think that those hitchhikers and waitresses from time to time have remembered me and smiled and that maybe it kind of restored a little bit of their faith in humanity in general...sob, sob...corny, i know, but it felt good to be able to help.  Especially to help someone i didn't even know and stood to gain nothing in return from........slave luci
