I'll go! Wouldn't that be too much fun? 2 Dommes, 2 subbies, campfire, fried fish and skillet bread, fresh picked berries presented by subbies, massages by the campfire, swimming buck nekkid in the lake?  I'm game. Say when, I'll make the boy pack our things..................................................

LOL then by all means take Erin.  I also agree with Julia that to have a 15 person camping event and not consolidate and share the load is a bit silly when you all have to carry everything.

But you'll manage, things are economized for camping and hiking all over the place now.

And do a test run- a half hour walk around your block should be a good test of bumps and rubbing and thigns.

juliaoceania -> RE: A first time for everything (5/27/2007 8:52:02 PM)

I would think that taking multiple first aid kits, matches, gas for a stove, camp stoves, cooking utensils, staples for eating (like powdered milk, flour, salt and such) just seems wasteful to me....lol

When we went away for three weeks different people were responsible for different things to bring so that we could economize space.

curiousexplorer -> RE: A first time for everything (5/27/2007 8:53:31 PM)

2.5 miles in 4 miles out? Beer, esky, ice, hotplate, steaks, sausages, onions, guitar, insect repellant, chair, frisbee. With that distance you could take just about anything you want. I've been on group trips like this and we've taken huge tarps, camp ovens, chairs, eskys whatever we wanted, sometimes even making a couple of trips. If you know everyone get the group to throw in together.

" because the overly experienced people thought I should just get up and keep going with a rock wedged beneath my kneecap!"

Experienced people should know a group only moves as fast as it's slowest member. And you always look after an injured person (except in extreme conditions when they are dead and just don't know it yet).

"Since they started letting cattle graze at high altitudes, most streams are now home to giardia."

I'm curious, how exactly are cattle so bad? Growing up drinking from rivers in mountain farm country had no effect on me, neither did drinking from mountain streams in our high country where cattle were still allowed. In fact the only mountain streams I avoid drinking from are the ones near resorts. You really can't get better water than fresh from a mountain stream. At least not in this part of the world.

"Girlscout... is cotton that bad?  I always thought cotton was one of the most breathable fabrics"

spankmepink11,
Cotton is indeed an excellent fabric for hiking. The only problem with cotton is it's poor insulation when wet. So it's not what you want to wear canoeing where you might be immersed, but for hiking it is great and recommended by everyone I've ever met who had anything to do with outdoor activities.

"there are snakes everywhere up here. Its one of thethings we have ot watch for (and im a little concerned) and its also why I refuse to use a sleeping bag.  a blanket and pillow, yes, but nothing that will leve me ina confined area with a potentialy unpleasant creature (other than my tentmate) "

I'm confused. You are scared of snakes coming in at night, and instead of being in a cocoon, you want to be under a loose blanket? I would have thought it was preferable to have a snake curl up next to your sleeping bag than slither in under your blanket? (sleep well). Not that its likely to happen anyway. What is your area like for spiders, scorpions and other insects? They're more likely to climb into your tent than a snake.

"I keep seeing self-inflating mats. I wonder if they are any good, theres one at walmart for like $10"

They are good, and it depends on your needs. If you are going to really get into hiking where weight and space will become a concern you'll want to spend a bit more and get the smallest lightest one you can. If this trip is about the level your aiming at, the cheap stuff is fine to see what you like and what you need. The foam ones are also fine, but they can be a pain when going on longer hikes.

Tannie -> RE: A first time for everything (5/27/2007 8:58:57 PM)

It would be a good idea to get some MREs if there is an Army surplus store in your area.  They are great to have handy in case you get lost.  They're pretty light and each meal has about 1300 to 1500 calories in it, along with a heater pack, matches, and a  large wetwipe.  Instructions for using the heater pack to warm up the main part of your meal are included.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: A first time for everything (5/27/2007 9:28:08 PM)

If i get into more serious hiking and camping, I am sure there will be more of the intense stuff. But wiht the short hikes to and from, we arent overly concerned with too much. It is, after all, only 1 night. And they have learned form past outtings with different groups that its safer for everyone to have their own than to depend on one to be responsable for smething and then have them forget it. We never know for certian who is going to show up, what with work schedules cancelling pans at the last moment. Its safer to make sure everyone has their own than chance anything being missing.  And since its only an overnight, there really isnt that much we have to take.  For a few days or a week, im sure planning is quite different.

Just a quick note, travel spacebags are my new best friend. My pillow and clothes are now less than an inch thick and up against the back of my pack. Keeps stuff from shifting around too much, and it isnt big and bulky. Weee

Just wondering if you have Bears there?
If so you have to be very careful about any food you bring.
They will attack you for food if very hungry, so there are certain precautions you must take.

Have a great time!

They dont really attack you unless you show anger at them destroying your camp, belongings, ice chests, car, etc.,  trying to get your food.

Stand politely about 30 feet away and they wont even notice you.

p.s.  In other words, hang your food 15 or so feet off the ground about 30 or more feet outside of camp.

Or put PLENTY of food out smothered with honey and lay in wait with a 30.06.
You ARE taking a large caliber sidearm with you for bears and wild hogs right?

p.s.  Have you ever seen a living wild animal you didn't want to kill, popeye?

p.p.s.  I was reading an article today in Scientific American about a group that is discussing "re-wilding" North America.  The population in the center of our country is diminishing, and our country and environment and biosphere will not really repopulate and recover from the centuries of human slaughter of animals until the large animals are introduced.  It made the point that since we have reintroduced wolves into Yellowstone, the deer and elk populations have now recovered to the point where they are healthy and surviving.

If we allow the population to recover naturally, we will have to wait 1000s, 10000s, or 100000s of thousands of years.  Apparently, we repopulate antelope, bring elephants and other large land animals from Africa and India, and large predators like lions and tigers to the United States, our biosphere will build itself back up.

Was an interesting article.  I have considered for a long time the importance of reforesting the southwest.

I don't know where you are from Sinergy, but up North here we know better and they will attack at times even when there is no food around.
But it is especially dangerous if you have goodies in the tent with you, you waking up freaked out could cause an attack.

Yes, you need to raise your food off the ground and away from your camp.

Oh and if your 30 feet away the bears will definately notice you!

Standing still is good advice though, whatever you do, do not run. If attacked play dead and try to hide your neck and tummy. If the atttack were to still happen, it is known you can try and hit the bear  directly in the snout hard  with your foot or fist or preferably a blunt object if at hand.

From what I understand, there are three types of bears.

Grizzly Bears are omnivorous, but they will not generally eat people.  What makes them worrisome is their level of unpredictability.  They may attack you.  They may attack you to kill you.  They may run away.  They will not let you know before ripping your head off what kind of day they are having.

Black bears are herbivores.  They will only attack you if you piss them off.

Brown bears (the kind we have in the Sierras) are omnivores.  They will attack and kill people in order to eat them.  It does not happen very often.

I may have browns and blacks mixed up, but we have the omnivores in the Sierras if I remember correctly.

I said that.  Want bears to wake you up?  Keep food in your tent.

I misspoke.  They will notice you.  They may or may not care depending on what kind of bear they are and what you happen to be doing at the time.

edited to fix my quoting.

Fucking with my children will piss me off.

I suspect the same could be said for bears.

I was thinking more along the lines accidentally coming across a bear and her cubs; as in surprising her.
