I've been doing my own shopping for years. It's no big deal. I know where everything is that I want to buy, and have my basket filled within 5 minutes... every time. I never use a list or coupons, and almost never stop for free samples.

It would be fair to say that my goal is to get in and out as quickly as possible.

Now if I had to shop for someone else... that would slow me down immensely, and probably would work on my nerves some.

Typical male....I go, I buy, I leave...(and check out all of the fine Chicago pussy)..I also linger in the frozen food section just to watch the nipples get hard.......Does this make me some sort of sicko?

And also:  "They never ask for help, except maybe from the butcher, but they always say they never had problems finding anything when the cashier at the register asks," she said.   <<<<<  im sorry but  i have NEVER in my life  been asked by a cashier if i had problems finding anything nor have i ever heard a cashier ask anyone else the same question.. So exactly which grocery chain is this that asks such a question?????? This by itself makes me question the complete validity of the article.

I'm asked that all the time. Whole Foods is particularly helpful, but then many of the other grocery stores I've frequented ask me that, too.   Are you scowling and grumbling when you get to the cashier?

I cook, I clean, I wash, I sew (yes I have my own sewing machine and even made a wedding dress once) and I shop.   I have learned that most of my grocery shopping can be accomplished by sticking to the outside of the store.   WHEN I go up and down the aisles I get things that I really don't need.   I make a list of my needs and that is what I get.   Oh yes  I do shop the sales and check prices but then I livve on a fixed income - nice to be retired.   I almost always go to the checkout stand that has the best looking cashier (aint dead yet you know lol).   I have a freezer so I stock up on some things and I have a 25 cu ft side by side fridge.   LOL   yes I like my food.   I was chatting with a sub the other day and she wanted me to relocate to her house because it was a mess   lol  and she hated cooking.   I even get stuff to bake.  when I go camping I bake there too.

Not so typical I guess.  I don't like fiddle-farting around when I shop for anything, but I know where things are in a couple of my favorite stores.  I also know what ingredients will substitute and which won't and pay attention to what's on sale.

Hell, I even know how to use red, black, and white pepper all at the same time.

I do 99% of the cooking here, so I usually do the shopping as well. Not once have I ever had a breakdown, or been afraid to ask an employee where something was.

I go in, get what we need and gtfo...

But have you guys ever noticed that shopping in like the mastercard commercial, I ALWAYS get stuck behind some dumb woman who insists on wasting time writing a check, instead of using a debit card, and screws up everyone else's timing.

(chuckles) We have a chain grocery store called "Food 4 Less" out here.
If you value your mental stability, never, ever shop at one on a weekend!
Entire extended families of 4-8 people shop as a slow moving trainwreck,
the kids screaming and running around, the adults gawking at the huge amounts
of products and everyone wanting to try the free samples.

We used to go shopping there in the middle of the night while the
stock team was doing their job and pop wheelies with the grocery
carts in the parking lot.

Yeah...no shit...and while we're on the subject!!!!  All you people that drive the wrong way down the aisles!!!!  I swear I'm gonna bring a bullhorn one of these days and scream at volume 10 "Hey DUMBASS!!!! Possibly you haven't noticed...but we drive on the RIGHT side of the road in this country!!!!!"

(I feel better now).

When a cashier asks me if I found everything okay, I know they're only asking because they have to. But what if I didn't find everything okay - would they stop checking, and make everyone waiting in line just stand around while they personally retrieved all of the things I couldn't find?

HELL no, it's just something that they say. It's like when someone typically says, "HI, how are you?" they don't really want to know about your mental health, or how your athletes' foot is coming along, or if you've just shit your pants - it's just something people say.

I was in an odd mood once, and just for grins I asked a cashier what she'd do if I didn't find everything okay. She acted kind of stunned, like she was a robot that had been splashed with water and shorted out. Then she sort of gawked at me with her mouth open, as if to say, "you're not supposed to say that, just say yes I did and keep the line moving."

Smiling, I told her I didn't think she really cared.

"Thank you, and have a nice day".

Ever notice how certain cashiers can make the words "Thank you" seem exactly the same as "Fuck you" by their look, and tone of their voice?

I have grocery shopped for years, it is part of my weekly routine. My ex-wife had a problem with spending money and she was like jack and the bean stalk with the grocery money, she did not quite have enough money left when she was done buying a bunch of dum bullshit. I shop at a small Food Lion, I go into the right side of the store walk every aisle till I get to the left side and it is check out time.

That's how I do it. "List? I don't need no stinkin' list!" I get what I need, and some eye candy, and I'm good. Shopping alone is the best. Get in, grab it, and get out.

No problems.

U.S. men are doing more and more grocery shopping, both for themselves and their families, but retailers are still not doing much to make the trip any more enticing, retail consultants and industry experts said.

"Men do represent a large part of grocery shopping dollars and they aren't being very well accommodated ... sales are being lost," Mandy Putnam, vice president at consulting firm TNS Retail Forward said.

Very true. IMO, grocery stores are deliberately set up to be inefficient, assuming that as someone is forced to walk through several different aisles, they will see more things that they "remember that they needed", or will otherwise be inclined to impulse-buy. To assist in this, store directories are minimal and often outdated, and layouts are occasionally changed. There is a lot of money, and a lot of research done on physical product placement in food retailing- often more than is spent on the actual product.

i also agree that there is far too much artificial market segmentation and specialization. Cereal i'm okay with (Golden Grahams, check), but when it comes to "Health and Beauty" items... holy shit. At least a hundred variations on toothpaste (if they make one that's "Whitening AND Tartar Control", why would i want just "Whitening" or just "Tartar Control"?), and shampoos and conditioners... anywhere from a hundred million to fifty billion, i'd have to guess. Do i want my hair to be thinner, thicker, moister, fuller, or shinier? i just want clean, and not smelling like my great-aunt's perfume, okay?

But if you want to know why i really feel discriminated against, i go to check out, i'm standing in line for ten or fifteen minutes, and what do i have to read? Magazines about celebrity weddings, Jon-Benet Ramsey, and how to make cookies that look like Disney princesses. Where's my goddamned car magazines?

Yeah, beauty consultants call the hair-dye aisle the "wall of confusion" !
Toothpaste is both too complicated now and too expensive.
Shampoo should not need to come with printed directions.

Oh yeah, the other magazines are in a separate area that you
have to search for, increasing the chance that you will buy more stuff !
"The Weekly World News" and other gossip rags are kept up front as impulse buys.

So Ladies....see how many self contained self supporting men there are and we have all got the same message....Men know how to shop. Women dont.

I suggest checkouts for men only in super markets !!!!
Incidently I've got a sewing machine as well. A new fangled one, it plugs in to the electric. Used one of those old treadle ones for years!
