Emperor1956 -> RE: What was/is your favrotite child's show??? (5/29/2007 7:51:10 AM)

As a kid:

Romper Room...there was something about Miss Jane even then that made me want to be bad...
(In contrast, I HATED "The Magic Door".  What a wank of a show.  I'd have rather watched Mass, which is why they put up the show to begin with.)
Shari Lewis and Lambchop
The Rocky and Bullwinkel Show

As a teenager:  I shattered my femur in a car crash when I was 15, and spent 97 days pinned to a hospital bed.  In that time I fell in love with The Electric Company.  What a brilliant show.

As a father:

Mandatory daddy-daughter watching for MANY years:
Lambchop's Play Along (STILL HOT for Shari Lewis!)
Rocky and Bullwinkel (hmmm...there's a pattern here)

As a Dominant to a woman with kids now:

Pinky and the Brain, in reruns.
Jacks Big Music Show (that same droll mixture of kid comedy and adult humor)

Barney always weirded me out.  The Doodle Bops scare me now.  That style of "children are really just little adults on slightly too large doses of throrazine" scares me.

Rocky and Bullwinkle.  I especially liked the Fractured Fairy Tales and Mr. Peabody & Sherman segments of the show.
I liked the Disney Sunday night show, "Walt Disney Presents." They showed a lot of great movies.

Shame ABC moved that to Saturday nights. I so looked forward to end of weekend. All the running and go here.. there.. kids all over.

Sunday nights was family night for me and my girls. It came on early 7pm .. ended at bed time. Our time for just us.

But no.. those assholes moved it to Saturday nights for awhile. And when it was discovered they screwed up... most no one was home Saturday night..even with kids.. did they move it back to Sunday?...No.. those idiots replaced it all with stupid reality shows.

Sighs.. of the good old days of yester-year....Katy thanks for the loving memories hun.. I owe ya one..

IEvolve -> RE: What was/is your favrotite child's show??? (5/29/2007 11:43:34 AM)

Ok, so shall we stroll down memory lane together???

It all began with our local Saturday morning shows.  First, Channel 3 Clubhouse.  Local kids in the gallery, goofy skits, black and white.  Then over on the other channel would could get on TV...it was Buckaroo Rodeo with Buck Barry.  He was this crothety old guy who rode up on a horse and did the show.  He would do these goofy games and cheat.  You know, the kind where you would slide the horse down and it would bounce back and where it stopped you won a prize.  Well, ol' Buck would always go, "Aaaaaaaaaand it stopped waaaaaaayyyyy back here." to slide it back to a cheap and lousy prize.  Also, every kid who was ever there as a guest said he was a mean ol' bastard who hated kids.!!!

More later.  Time for lunch.

Oh....let's test how old you are.  Ever set in front of the TV on Saturday morning watching the test pattern before the station came on the air to actually watch cartoons?  Do you even know what a test pattern is??  Hmmmm?????

Termyn8or -> RE: What was/is your favrotite child's show??? (5/29/2007 11:56:27 AM)

Hands down, moose and squirrel, Boris and Natasha. The other segments of Bullwinkle show were good too.

I think the only thing that has come close is the Simpsons. I mean there were adult (not risque) references in Bullwinkle, like when they gave the titles of the next episode, remember the always gave two ?

But I want to get hooked up with Matt Groening's drug dealer. Goodbye reality.

Homer: Sometimes I think we're the worst familty in town.
Marge: Maybe we should move to a larger community

And no canned laughter, that is very important to me. If you have to tell me when to laugh you are not doing your job.

But the OP didn't single out humor/cartoons, so Star Trek, the original. Bones and Spock. I was like six and seven years old when it first ran, and I watched it in reruns. I think it was the most though provoking, mind opening show of the century, or possibly the millenia. I think it did alot for me, and I think every kid should have that series on DVD.

Another big favorite of mine was The Road Runner and Coyote. The ones before they talked. They had some simple sound effects and some orchestra music.

I have dowloaded alot of old cartoons on P2P, but I can't seem to get the really old WB stuff. And when I get the really old stuff it is too old. One notable, very entertaining one I got last year was The Singing Sword with Bugs and Yosemite Sam. A buddy brought over his five or six year old daughter and I have never seen anyone's eyes glued to the screen like that. But then even the adults loved it. I didn't notice the copyright date but I am sure it's old, I'm surprised I never saw it before I DLed it.

There are many interesting things, for example I got the Flintstones doing s Winston cigarette commercial. And that's nothing, I still have a betamax and I know a guy who used to me a garbage man. Adding two plus two.....well I got some stuff. In the 90s I got to rewatch the ORIGINAL airing of the last episode of MASH. You can get that, but the commercials. It's like being in a time machine.

I can hardly stand any TV now. I hate it. My bigscreen only mainly comes on now for something I play on the PC (yes I have one of those pricey little boxes).

The good old days, it's a shame that more and more people missed them.

One of these days I'll get aroung to ripping my old beta tapes into mpegs, but it will be a while. First off it is in real time (1X) and I have yet to learn how to use the software. But one of these days......

Thanks for bringing it up OP.

I agree with you there. It wasn't necessarily a kid's show, but Star Trek was a favorite. We must be close to the same age, because I remember being about 6 or 7 when it first aired. What made it special to me is this little tidbit. When I was 6, I 'helped' my Dad build our first color TV. He said my eyesight was keen enough to pick out the proper colored bands of the transistors. They were mostly triple bands of various colors that had to put in the right place. We did this out in the shed off the carport...He made me feel like he couldn't have done this without me...What a sweet man. Once the set was built, he brought it in the house, ran all those test patterns on it. It took a while to get the color adjusted. It seems everyone was green for a while. Eventually it was all settled. I can't recall the night Star Trek aired, but I do remember this...I would get sent to bed around 7ish, but then Dad would come wake me up, and tell me Star Trek was coming on. So, we'd sneak into the living room and watch it while Mom was sleeping.
Because of that special time with Dad, I still have a fondness for that old show.

I remember the electric company with a very young Morgan Freeman in it. I also remember and miss fraggle rock. I hope they come out on dvd someday.

corsetgirl -> RE: What was/is your favrotite child's show??? (5/29/2007 5:51:23 PM)

Hmm...

Romper Room

Captain Kangaroo (my favorite was the Bunny Rabbit who would  dump golf or ping pong balls on the Captain)

Bugs Bunny

Banana Splits

Sesame Street

Pink Panther

This is very interesting, Sesame Street came out in 1969 and in 1970, I got to see this show for the very first time.  I was about 11 years old, think I would be too old to watch this stuff but I was mesmerized at that time in combining media with education for children.
