As I see it, someone who smokes a cigarette a month is someone who smokes, not a smoker. Most assuredly, I smoke. I do -not- fall into the category of "smoker" because as I see it, one of the criteria of "smoker" is regular, frequent use of cigarettes. You're defining the category of smoker as "someone who has, at any time, smoked a cigarette." Fine, but again, language is -not- as black and white as you're trying to make it. Simply because it's used by such a variety of people, there are shades of meaning and connotative interpretations of words. Language, in this kind of use, -can't- be black and white.

Yup. "smoker" means "someone who smokes." Cool. The cultural category of "a smoker" is up for debate.

I agree with perverse. And yes, I normally think of a "smoker" as being one who regularly lights up in any legal area as the need for nicotine warrants. And that need is usually much more than once or twice a month.
But, in this day and age, I s'pose I need to adjust My thinking and not ass-u-me that most people still view the habit in this manner.
However, I will say that I am a smoker, and if a boy needs clarification on that, I am more than happy to give it to him. If he feels he doesn't, then I think it is alright to
ass-u-me that he is aware and cigarette smoke is not particulalry offensive to him
So for those who need to know:

1. I expect a boy to be ready to flick his bic for Me.
2. When I go to a restaurant I always say "smoking, please"
3. I may ask you to carry My cigarettes in your coat pocket when W/we go to the
theater.
4. During intermission I will immediately exit the building and head for the
"designated smoking area".
5. All boys have permission to send Me a carton of filtered, non-menthol, ultra light
cigarettes in lieu of next week's tribute.

Ah, ya know, I just had to add that last little part!

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Non-smoking smokers! (5/30/2005 9:06:07 PM)

One of the turn offs to me is kissing a smoker is like sucking on an ash tray, I can tell right away when someone goes to kiss me and they've smoked. It's a nasty taste to be kissing. And most the time smokers stink like cigarette smoke, I don't care what people say that they don't most do. My brother smokes my aunt smoked my uncle smoked, He died because he smoked and got emphazema, and they all smell smokey when I am around them and it stinks. The cab driver I used to ride with smoked to and he made me stink like it and I'd just taken a shower and by end of ride you'd never know I was clean.

I think restarantes are in their right to ban smoking in their establishments scooter. And smoking and non smoking is a misnomer because the smoke floats all over the place, you may not be lighting up yourself but you're sure smelling it.

Once a loooooooooooooooong time ago when I was 14 I tried to get started because the older girls in the group home did and it was the in cool and defiant thing to do, They used to think it was cool to hotbox their cigies and swallow it an blow it out nose:)) I tried once and burnt a hole in my favorite t shirt from the ash:))

Well, I'm going to leave it at this. I think you're wrong. I think that you aren't looking at colloquial language and instead acting as if words are only correct if used as you've been taught they should be used.

I used every illustration I could to outline that in my previous post. I realize you don't agree, but I maintain that you're wrong in this. (in reply to ScooterTrash)

?? OK..guess that will teach me to come back and answer the poll question...Perhaps I was safer ranting...lol. I wasn't even referring to anyone's comment in particular? But OK...I am pretty sure you think I'm wrong. (scratches head)

From your list I think you are a smoker
from the "smokes in social situations only and up^
and that depends on what you're smokin' [:D].

I do not consider someone having a smoke on rare
occasions a "smoker".

I think the attack on Smokers is getting a bit ridiculous!

PassionsHarmony -> RE: How do you define "smoking"? (6/7/2005 12:31:33 PM)

My opinion is going to be probably different then others. I have smoked on and off for about 12 years. With periods of quiting for as long as 3 years. Even when I quit I considered myself a smoker. Mostly because the desire to have one was still present I just controlled it. I am concious of others that do not smoke and never light up around non smokers in an area that is free of it. I will not even smoke outside at a house I visit that they do not smoke in. Yes, I agree that it is legal and sometimes it is annoying that others take that feedom when it is not legally an issue. I also though can understand that my smoking does effect another. To me it is a matter of choice and yes, I feel one needs to be clear about it. If a person says they smoke then I find it hard to quibble about how much, you either can tolerate smoking or you cannot. If you cannot then do not go there. I can choose to smoke or not, but another cannot choose it for you. Like I feel with all things the desire to not smoke, drink or do drugs comes from inside. You, can adjust to anothers feeling but you cannot change for anyone but yourself.

Five of the seven hospitals in Des Moines, Iowa are banning smoking anywhere on hospital grounds.... including parking lots. But I don't think they are hiring a guard to patrol around to see if anyone is smoking inside of their car.

Yet.

Lighting up is lighting up anytime or anywhere. Doesn't matter if you do it once a day, or once a year.

In Anderson, IN, one of the hospitals (maybe both, but I only interviewed at one of them) has banned smoking within a certain radius so that their employees will not go to the nearer restaurants and smoke on their breaks. It's like, a mile.

While that would be good for me, it isn't right. I do wish that there were more smoke-free places that I could go to, but that doesn't mean that I think everything should be required to be smoke free. It really blows to not be able to go out to bars or to play pool or anything ... but at the same time, it's not right for me to tell however many smokers there are in this area that they can't go out and enjoy themselves either. I just want one or two businesses to go totally smoke free so that I can go out and do stuff once in awhile.
