I like old stuff, and the older the better. When my 20 year old car went down for the count I bought an 18 year old car. My bigscreen is almost old enough to drink but still works fine.

I like quite a bit of music that is near as, or older than me, and I never throw out an old videotape. I also still have a betamax. Of course I have a VHS (it is a 1995 second from top of the line Sony, the last of the good ones), funny, I have not yet bought a DVD player though. When I do though you can bet it is not going to be the $39 kind. Believe that it will be region free or hacked to be, and is going to have more high definition modes than I'll ever use.

As far as cars, I got an 89, I want a 70. I think 1970 was one of the best years for American cars. They had the suspension and handling down pat, I don't think they have really improved since then. The power was there. Damnear every car had a V8, which I know is not good on gasoline, but so what. Cars of substance. A real frame under it.

One of the furnaces in the house is gravity, and thermopile operated. It is almost totally silent in operation and if the power goes out we still have some heat.

Even my speakers are 20 years old, and IMO outperform most of what is on the market today. I bought them when they were about 10 years old and paid as much as they cost new, but I knew what I was getting. Nowadays you get a bunch of little speakers that ain't worth ten bucks and a subwoofer in the corner. Bunch of crap as far as I am concerned.

There is only ONE THING that has impressed me that is not old. I got this Casio Privea digital piano. Awesome, has the feel and sound that just can't be beat. I really don't have room for a real piano. After playing with it a few minutes I turned to the salesman and said "You might want to go get the box".

But nothing else lately has impressed me, not at all. Some of this is substantive, and some is strictly my preference. I want a car with bumpers. I consider that substantial. I want to be able to see the hood when I drive, that is a preference.

To sum it up, I like old stuff. I would love to have a real piano, but I don't have all that much room, but I made room for the electric one. I could have a spinet I am sure, but I don't want to carry it. I know how heavy real pianos are.

Old stuff, built to last. I got a buddy bought a Maytag refrigerator. Huge warranty, but this certain common problem happened to his, and it was $400 to fix, long warrany or not, not covered. And this is with no upgrade so it will happen again, so out to the tree lawn it went and was off to Sears. Come on, this was a MAYTAG !

Lots of cars newer than mine get junked every day, plenty of bigscreens newer then mine hit the landfills every day.

I think I am onto something here. What say you ?

I love my old Kitchenaid blender from the fifties. It still works like a charm. It's a heavy bugger, solid and definitely built to last.

Old stuff I love..
Hippie vans!  I so want an old VW van, it's my dream car.  Though I am an avid pedestrian, I would kill for one of those!
Music!  I love the Mills Brothers, and Bobby Darin.. ooh, and just about *anything* from the 60's.  They don't make music like they did back then, that's for sure... I hate that I missed out on it.  Curse my youth, I came around just in time to see all my heroes die off.  Hendrix and The Who, The Beatles and Jefferson Airplane.. Ravi Shankar.. woot!  Does that count as old 'stuff'?  I think it does.
I also preferred my mom's old 8 tracks and vinyl... plus her old speakers and record player to all this new stuff... just sounded so much better to me.
Cartoons!  Though Spongebob is my favorite.. that's kinda a fluke.. I loved Scooby Doo and Speed Racer, Underdog and stuff like that..
I guess I kinda like 'old' men, too.. <giggle>

Things with history are important to me ..

I have thousands of books ... many mine, many left me by family or given me by friends ... i have sevreral first editions .. and even a bound volume of Shakespeare that dates back to 1790 ... (you can tell because shakespeare is spelled "shakesper" which was the accepted spelling then .. i can only imagine how many people have read from it .. when i teach shakespeare at school i always read to the kids from it.

I wear a signet ring ... we know it belonged to my Great-grandmother .. though its likely to be older than that, i haver worn it every day since my mother gave it to me when i turned 21. just looking at it and knowing what history that ring has seen, which places it has accompanied the members of my family .. it gives a me a glow that i couldn't get from anything new

Quality does seem to be lacking in modern life.
i will say, while i appreciate your perspective, 1989 was not exactly a high-water mark in the auto industry... you'd probably be better off in the long run with something from 1970. Myself, i like cars from the late 50's/early 60's, i just wish i could still afford to put gas in them

And I only love her more now...what an eloquent post.

As for old ....I love classic muscle cars.  I also have a passion for antique jewelry.  I do enjoy antiquities but I haven't a place in my home for them with two UM's under the age of 8.  Stuff just gets broken.

Same here history or sentimental
for instance our xmas tree- it was the first fake tree my parents ever bought.
32 some odd years ago. I wanted it. so now my family uses that same old tilting to one side- missing a number of branches-taped up in places LOL my charlie brown tree Love it !! no other one like it in the world. Its beautiful to me.

my dad bought me a shappire ring when I was 10- I gave it to my daughter on her 16th birthday- she cried and said it was the most special thing she had ever been given. The ring is 39 yrs old and I hope it gets handed down for generations.

Does Hubby count as "old stuff"? I like Him.

We have lots of our original wedding gifts from 1968, and lots of antiques. They just don't make things to last like they used to.

I like old guns.  Old art.  Old movies.

And I love old tractors.  Old engines.  Old cars.

Term, I'm coming into a little bit of playtime money soon, and I'm thinking of getting a car for FUN.  And what keeps coming back to mind is a 1970 El Dorado Convertible.  Red.  White leather interior.  Parade boot.  About 400 lbs of CHROME.   And...9 mpg?  mmmmmmm!

E

Edited to add:  and I like mature women, too *GRIN*
