Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich will enter the fray. This should shake things up.

I will admit to not knowing that much about Gingrich. The information about his views is out there, but is very old. It will be interresting to see how he feels about things now.

Fred Thompson seems like a strong candidate. I would think he would be very diffcult to debate with.

Gingrich has been married three times... he left one wife for another while she was dying of cancer.. if you ask me his chances of winning because of this are next to nil.

LOL, I bet John McCain just loves this!
He'll go from 4th to 6th place in the polls now.
Hasn't Rudy Guiliani had three wives too? I still say Rudy should be running as a Democrat.
I'd be interested in seeing what both of them have to say about the issues.

Wasn't he cheating on one of his wives when he was accusing Clinton of having an affair?

Now that is the sort of Republican the Whitehouse needs! LOL

Typical Republicans, the best they have to offer are two bit actors and lying cheating assholes.

I see him and think right away.... Law & Order.... The Hunt For Red October....to name but a few..

If he debates in real... like he does with Sam Waterston on Law & Order.. should be interesting to sit through.

Michael, Bill Clinton has both of those bases covered.
Like him or not you have to admit that Newt Gingrich is a pretty smart guy!
He was a History Professor I believe.
I'd prefer to see him run in the Constitution Party though.
After Bush I have a bad taste for Republicans.

Fred Thompson replied to a few questions when he was interviewed after he left the Senate.

1)  He said he did not like spending 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, listening to government twaddle and voting on it.  Dont we already have a person who refuses to listen to anybody and avoids doing anything important already?

2)  He said he does not do frenetic.  He did not enjoy having a job that required him to actually be somewhere and actually do something.  Again, dont we already have that in the White House?

Is it possible for the Republicans to ever nominate somebody who is a) not a has-been B-list actor and b) has an education and some insight into world affairs, and c) has a work ethic?

I am wondering what they offered him.  Perhaps they told him "We will elect you and you can do as little (or even less) as the cretin we elected last time."

Sounds like they are doing what they did last time, elect a doofus figurehead while Satan (err, Shotgun or Newt) pulls the strings in the background.

<fast reply>

The latest New Yorker has a piece about the GOP, and it includes a fair amount on Gingrich.

They also did a Gingrinch profile in 2001, but I haven't read that yet.

You sure you want a Republican with a work ethic? Could mean doing a lot more damage.

There is that.

Although the fact that they dont seems to say a lot about what their party really stands for.

p.s.  While I often post about continually getting jobs that require me to do almost nothing, I have been actively working since I was 11 years old, worked full time+ when I was in undergraduate and graduate school, and have worked 2 or more jobs most of my adult life.
