LadyEllen -> oh good grief; Big Brother is back (5/31/2007 10:21:10 AM)

The new series of Big Brother has started. Channel 4 is now off limits to all but the insane and those inspired by an unhealthy degree of Schadenfreude. (the psychologists stopped tuning in at series 2, and took to other careers shortly after).

Why is it that its illegal to make criminals fight to the death for our pleasure, but its perfectly OK to have Big Brother on the television?

I'm guilty of checking it out each time to see if there is anyone interesting on it. But, in my defense! I rarely make it past the first couple of shows and, so far, the only time that I didn't loose interest was when Janelle was on.  It was amusing to watch how she portrayed this dumb blonde when actually she was quite smart (and cheeky). Same with "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race"...only time I watched them was when Rob and Amber were on. They were just so wonderfully devious..lol.. (stopped watching though as soon as they were eliminated)... So yeah, have to be honest..I've been guilty of watching the ridiculous show...but then, I always knew I was a little insane [;)]

As far as being "inspired by an unhealthy degree of Schadenfreude"? Not sure I would go so far as to say that about myself..I mean, if it was a show created to insult someone's moral character or belittled them for one reason or another in a serious manner, I would definately not be amused, nor would I watch..

LadyE, could it be because it's the closest the viewing public can get to the circus games of Roman days?

I remember the first series, but I left London when it ended being a novelty.

Still, I miss Channel 4 terribly. There isn't another channel quite like it in the world. I remember the series about sexual deviances circa 1994... and even before, its series 'Censored' (I was at college then in Brighton)...

Ha, British telly. It rules.

You know, politicians talk about overcrowding in prisons... Maybe we ought to bring back gladiatorial combat and get rid of some of these "reality tv" shows.  I, for one, could do with never seeing Paris Hilton's face again.

The new season hasn't started yet on this side of the pond.  I love it and I watch  every episode!  I'm a voyeur, what can I say?[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m25.gif[/image]
