Status: offline 		I was just watching Paula Zahn on CNN.
She did a segment about private security guards.
They guard big office buildings, shopping malls and the like.
According to the article they get minimal training after being hired if any at all.
Most of them are unarmed and can't protect themselves nevermind you or me. They're told to "call the police" if anything happens!
So, some lady is being accosted or a guy is getting his brains beat in and they "call the police" and stand there and do nothing?
And she said that there is no standard of training or background checks between the states.
"Some of these people have criminal records" said a security expert.
And the pay is abysmal, depending on location security guards generally make from $7 to $16 per hour.
They said that the Janitors in the building made more money than the security guards!
What are these guys supposed to do if armed terrorists attack their office buildings, "call the police?"
They're supposed to be "the first line of defense."
If they're un-armed how are they supposed to defend anyone?
The article also said that states, municipalities, building owners etc have been "farming out" security needs to the lowest bidder!
Well, ... guess what they're going to get!
This whole industry needs to be standardised with ongoing training.
They need to be lisensed and trained to carry firearms.
They need standard and effective background checks.
And they need to be paid a good wage to attract good people into this trade, and it should be considered a trade.
What do you think?

Status: offline 		I did security work for years in my 20s (a good student job) and I used to say I was paid to loiter in public buildings

Status: offline 		Try calling 911 while some one is running amuck with weapons,you could be dead in a NY second and police response time 5 to 20 minutes,you have been dead for that length of time.I believe all security should be trained and armed...A master armed to the teeth smiles

I was a security guard when I was 20.  I got a call from my boss when he put me to watch the garage of an apartment building that I needed to stop by the office.

He gave me a billy club.  He said that the place was dangerous and I would "need this."  I responded "You are paying me minimum wage, and the people I am likely to meet may be armed with guns or knives, do you really think this 18 inch piece of wood will help me do anything but run away as fast as I can if threatened?"

He was not pleased with my response, but hey, I was a professional.

I got to sit out all night and write on my computer (I found an outlet the first night) while the moon gazed down on parked cars.

Status: offline 		I think the idea is deterrance, but it's not very deterring if you know that the guy "guarding" the place is tired, getting paid next to nothing, and unarmed.

Status: offline 		       I was lucky enough to have my job description spelled out for me as a night watchman.  I was there to keep my employers insurance rates down.  Nothing more.  It wasn't a bad place to do homework either.

Domiguy, I don't think we need any security guards at lumber yards, at least not during the day.
But, the ones protecting say, 50 story office buildings with thousands of people working in them should be of a higher caliber.
And if they're protecting "people" like that they should be well armed, well trained and well paid.
I think the day of overwight "Jimmy" the security guard who makes $10 an hour and lives with his parents should be comming to an end. Or, "Gus" the old fart who's retired and "works security" for "drinking money."
What they have in most buildings now are nothing more than hall monitors.
How would they protect you in a fire? Security Guards should be trained in  preliminary Firefighting in high rise buildings as well.

What will Fat Jimmy do? That's an easy one! He can work at Starbucks or McDonalds or start his own Pizza Parlor.

But seriously, this whole "Security" industry needs to be govt regulated and cleaned up!
I could start a security company and hire guys just out of jail or on work release and no-one would know except me!

There's something very wrong when someone who works at Starbucks coffee makes more than people in security!

Status: offline 		I know they have security guards with guns at the DMV, and at certain malls, so it could be a certain licsense that you need to carry. A licsense that it's much easier not to get.
