thanks for the sarcasm.  i was only trying to speak up about black men who prove themselves leaders based on beliefs and how they conduct themselves.  Tom Joyner's foundation which endows HBCU's and Tavis has his talks on PBS which i believe he uses to empower the black community.

Just for clarification since I forgot to add it at the begining, I used fast reply, so it shows up as me responding to your post but my post was not remotely in response to your post.

It would be interesting to hear Tom Joyner and Tavis Smiley's take on the subject.  i would think a bigger concern was that the illegals are becoming a greater minority than blacks.  i would think that would make them concerned as it would lessen their power to influence matters.

The sad thing is that if the illegals realized that America works on the supply and demand principal (unfortunately that would require they earn about OUR culture), they would understand that the more of them  (illegals) the less value they have and they will be no better off here.

They are breeding nothing more than a slave race and in the doing making the whites the minority in which we will benefit from the programs we set up for minorities.  Actually, we  (good'ol whities) deserve a break.

Yes, white people deserve a break. We have just been takin' it from the man for so long now....."We didn't land on Plymouth Rock landed on us!!!"

America has been worried sick and has ben asking around to try to find out what is  wrong with "good ol' whitey."

Why were there not any white folks working at the site?....Maybe the Hispanics were the only ones willing to do the job.

Oh..there were a few white guys, in fact the traffic guy was white... but no black men in a city that's population is 60%+ African American.  And I find it had to believe that the only people that would be willing to work on a government, union scale, schools repair project would be Hispanic.

Sorry, but buried in the loss of personal freedoms and other issues force fed to us wrapped in a flag since 9/11 and Katrina; is legislation that killed the "union scale"  "local equivalent" pay scale for government jobs. Regan started the job, Bush finished it. With the death of that,  the hegemony of the Local Union Hall and local tradesmen faded away just like grandmother months after the death of grandfather.  Open a newspaper one day and read about efforts to secure work for "local crews" on any of these jobs in any town in the union. Hate to be the one that breaks it to you. I have been eagerly awaiting the opening of the first store in my state of a national sporting goods chain. The political issue holding up construction: they are unwilling to commit to hiring any significant number of workers from this state to build it. They have their own out of state crews.

The construction trade has gone "multinational" , bids go to big firms that travel from out of state with their own established crews. So the makeup of the local population that is paying for any Municipal/State/Federal (funding and practices makes these distinctions blurred too), public works project is irrelevent.

Now you have your spyglass out and are looking for a workforce coming from out of state, maybe many states away,  and moving them in for a specific job. What you have is a similar model to the migrant workers who have been "essential" in the agriculture of america for years. In fact look at them closely, you may see some familiar faces. The hiring practices of these multi state if not multi national corporations have never been too finicky about green cards all they  care about is bottom line.

My bonafides to join this discussion? I am an American , white, of the Irish American subgroup. The one that went from "No Irish Need Apply" to the white house in one century. Want to know how we did it? Rent "The Departed" we don't have time here.

What I am not, is rich and priveledged, or someone who hopes to claw his way into the ranks of the rich and priveledged, or someone who hopes to use his "family values" as a bludgeon against anyone who talks or looks a little different. In short I am not the owner of a multinational cartel, a TV televangelist or a Republican Insider.  And I can tell you that these conversations between americans like dogs fighting over a bone, are making the people handing out the crap sandwiches really really happy.

Point well taken, domiguy.  So when have we "paid enough" penance?  What is going to make it all better?  What was done in the 1700's was done in ignorance on the part of the whites.

The City of Baltimore requires all government contractors pay Union Scale.

I hope your information is up to date, but I will hazard a "Hurray for the city of Baltimore".

Some cities have realized the drag that minimum wage, no health benefit workers at Walmart is having on their economy and have set in place legislation to force them to pay benefits. But both these examples are bucking the trends.

I stick to my guns that these national and international hiring practices are bringing these strange foreign faces to collect wages from your city.

Fake Social Security Cards are very easy to obtain in many parts of Houston.  I am sure the corresponding paperwork is as well.  When I was a Texas Works Advisor, I met an illegal who had even bought his own home in Houston and financed his car.  Though that does not really address the illegal immigration problem.  And the harbor or port probably verifies  that documentation for security reasons.  Many other employers do not.  They have found a niche in the service oriented sector.    Sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread.  But haven't read through all the posts yet, and it seemed like it wasn't going anywhere anyway.  [;)]

Since this thread is basically asking for input from Black Americans,  I will just go back to minding my own Native American business, whatever that may be.

perhaps your business might want to do a hostile takeover of the Domidong.

LightHeartedMaam:
Only you can answer the question of when you have paid enough penance or what is going to make it all better.  Perhaps when you as an individual come to grips with your collective guilt and resolve to make your personal choice against bigotry.
Slavery starts in this country in 1619 and continued until 1955 (Brown v. Board of education et al.)  (Yes, I am aware of when the thirteenth amendment was passed.)Until you read the reasoning behind the movement for reparations you will not understand the why of it.  When Rush & co spout off about never having owned slaves many seek to hop on the same wagon to exonerate themselves.  If you are happy with that characterization then there is nothing I can do or say to change your mind.
When you say that slavery was just ignorance on the part of whites it ignores the mass of white people who recognized it for the cancer that it was.  Anyone who implies the inherent inferiority of one group of people to another does it for personal gain and not out of ignorance...that is assuming they have a three digit IQ
