You call it stupid.

I call it cynical indifference to human life in order to support corporate profits.

Does anyone responding to this thread have any knowlege of the meat packing industry??? Americans consume tons of beef a day and I do not hear about too many people becoming ill from it. When meat packers sell their product to McDonalds, Campbels Soup, ect. those companies are not limited to the tests they perform. The bottom line is that any company can send their products to private labs for testing, for anything they want.

Tuomas -> RE: USDA To Meatpackers: You Have No Right To Test For Deadly Diseases (6/1/2007 11:28:16 AM)

My knowledge of the meat-packing industry is limited to a History Channel special and what I know about HACCP. Before HACCP, there where serious sanitation problems, because the only inspecting agency was the FDA, and there is no way they could certify all the food the US eats. Therefore, HACCP was divised where the processor would develop it's own hygene system, and certify it's own meat, and the FDA would only inspect the application of the programme. This resulted in a significant increase in food quality, so much so that HACCP has become the food standard in pretty much the entire world.

The issue, I guess, has to do with this one company wanting separate certification outside industry standard and use it to engage in destructive competition based on the implication that other meat was inferior for not having this certification. (Something like the 1990's Tylenol impasse where Tylenol tried to put on their packages and advertizing "does not contain salicylic acid" -implying that salicylic acid is bad for your health. The issue, of course, was that Aspirin IS salicylic acid, so anyone who saw the Tylenol advertizements and then looked at a package of Apirin wouldn't buy the latter out of fear of salicylic acid. However, this was overruled in court, because it constituted "destructive competition", which is illegal.) The only way in which separate certification would be valid as an advertizement means is to imply that the industry standard (HACCP) is deficient -unless you are marketing to the paranoid section of the market who fear all "corporate greed" tactics.

Corporativism, facism, socialism... pretty much the same thing in my book.

Or marketing to those who just want their food to test clean.

If you'll wait for a sexual partner to test clean, ...

The "free market" proponents should be all for this. If there's a want and/or need, people will buy, if it doesn't add any value, it'll just fade away.

Sounds like a "don't ask don't tell" policy to me.
Sometimes the big bad boogieman makes big bad contributions to politicians' electoral campaigns.

Oh yeah, I'm all for testing, if that's what the owners want; it's their meat. I just have a moral delimma about destructive competition. On the one hand there is the idiot who deserves it, and on the other there is the action of praying on people's fears. So, yeah; test all you want. I'd judge them on their advertizing...

If you wish to read about the meat packing industry during the early 1900's,
here is the uncensored original edition of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair,
circa 1905.

SeargentDave:
According to the article in question that does not seem to be the case when the FDA gets a restraining order to stop you.

That "capitalist" free-market would not allow government restrictions on testing or manipulation of product that is private property.[;)]

Dtesmoac -> RE: USDA To Meatpackers: You Have No Right To Test For Deadly Diseases (6/1/2007 5:40:45 PM)

I've seen some advertising in the US implying that US reared beef is better - one of the Fast Food chains plays on this..... appears the meat industry doen't want to have to prove it.

BST controversy spings to mind as well ........
How can it be anti competition to provide more information about your product..... provided it is acurate

Dtesmoac -> RE: USDA To Meatpackers: You Have No Right To Test For Deadly Diseases (6/1/2007 5:41:49 PM)

........... could it be that there is a genuine concern with mad BSE (mad cow) in the US herds............. !!!

Toumas:
Are you saying that capitalism and free market are the same thing?
Are you saying that a capitalist is entitled to ignore the law?
The cite seems to say that it is the larger capitalist  who is trying to crush a smaller capitalist and the government is siding with the larger capitalist.

The thing is, the tactic is anti-competition not because it's inaccurate about the company's product, but about the identical product from other companies. It prays on people's (understandible) ignorance of the process by implying other meats are unsafe. However, this is kind of premature to make that judgement, because the actual avertizement is not in question...
