AquaticSub -> Needles and art! (6/2/2007 10:24:12 AM)

So in my never-ending quest to make all my scholarly endeavors into an excuse to research BDSM and its practices, I am now writing a paper that takes various works of art and compares them to BDSM activities. I will be addressing if the activity is being displayed accurately and safely, and if not how it is done safely.

Yeah... my teachers love me.

Anyway, so the first work of art is "The Ecstasy of St. Theresa," which depicts a nun in the throes of religious ecstasy as an angel prepares to impale her with an arrow. I'm hoping to discuss it in the terms of needle play (practice of inserting needles into the flesh). However, for this, I need some sort of reference (preferably written) on the safe how-tos of needle play. Does anyone know of any books that contain that information?

Also, if anyone has any other paintings or artwork that they would suggest, feel free! [:)]

You know Jessica, I have to issue you an apology. You see, I have no idea you cared about me this much!

I mean, here you are, doing me favors! You keep bumping my thread to make sure that plenty of people read it! That's so sweet of you! The more people that read it, the better the chances of someone giving me some advice for my paper.

I really had no idea you were that concerned with my academic success.

Thank you!

Actually, we've got an awesome law teacher who I loved taking classes with. I'd take more with him but I don't have the time for it. It stinks.

AS ---

I don't have any info on needle play to offer, but it sounds like a fascinating paper.

One tidbit that might help: I'm guessing the saint in question is Teresa of Avila, whose name often appears without the H. Knowing that might help you find more information about her. She and Catherine of Siena were the first woman to be considered "doctors of the church," or saints whose widsom is especially worthy of study.

Good luck with your paper!

Cheers,

DC

That is a really good idea. I'll definately be doing some research into her. If I remember correctly, the angel stabbing her with the arrow is part of a religious vision she had. Because she described the pain as both terrible and wonderful (I think) is one of the reasons I'm so interested in this piece!

sares -> RE: Needles and art! (6/2/2007 4:03:32 PM)

Aqua,
If you're still looking for artwork, a depiction of St. Sebastian would be worth analyzing -- pretty boy tied to a tree, stuck full of arrows. Boticelli's is a place to start but there are tons out there by various artists.

...and a line from Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited," just because it amused me: [;)]
To Sebastian he said: "My dear, I should like to stick you full of barbed arrows like a p-p-pin-cushion."

...hope that helped a bit!

dcnovice -> RE: Needles and art! (6/2/2007 8:24:36 PM)

St. Sebastian could be a whole paper in himself!
