The profound thought of the day...

Does it feel better to love...
or to be loved?[sm=idea.gif]

I know MY answer...just wondering what others thought.

It is best to have both at the same time. That give and take makes for a bond that is just plain extraordinary.

kc692 -> RE: To love or be loved... (6/2/2007 5:38:26 PM)

It is better to have both, but if I can only have one, it's to be loved.

dawntreader -> RE: To love or be loved... (6/2/2007 5:52:05 PM)

i desire to have both.

But if i had to choose for this lifetime - it is to love, and i have done so many times and continue to do so...

The feeling I get from knowing that I love is nothing compared to the feeling of looking into a pair of eyes and *knowing* I am loved.

I agree, but that just amkes me fill with even more love for that person and the cycles escalates...so beautifully.  Also looking in his eyes and seeing he knows he is loved and watching the look as it makes him love me more. very intoxicating

Being truly loved is a feeling like no other.

Politesub53 -> RE: To love or be loved... (6/2/2007 6:15:38 PM)

The feeling of being loved, for who you are and what you are is incredible.
The feeling of loving someone, and knowing they feel the above is also wonderful
Either is good but when they gel, then thats truly magical

it needs to be mutual. unrequited, it's just painful.

KatyLied -> RE: To love or be loved... (6/2/2007 6:17:29 PM)

I love to love, but I hate the pain when it's unrequited.
So I will choose the more selfish, and much less occurring option of being loved.

tricia -> RE: To love or be loved... (6/2/2007 6:18:18 PM)

I think it's alot harder to be loved than it is to love.

I think people in general have a tendency to use love as a measuring stick for every relationship they have and others have.  I have had quite a few friends look at me with sadness in their eyes as they say, "tricia, you deserve to be with someone who loves you."

They will never understand how much more important it is - to me - to be with someone who will let me love them.

So, for me, it feels better to love.

Just to add:  Love doesn't have to be about fireworks or declared from the rooftops...it can be unspoken and quaint and still be just as meaningful and real.

Sorry - i rambled :)

To love is my reason for living..

.. to feel loved for who I am and what I am is my ultimate dream, whether fulfilled or not..

...to love when it's unrequited is one of life's necessary lessons... for it teaches you what love is all about...

.. but to know and be able to recognise and appreciate love when it's mutual, and to be able to stay and allow love to grow... that to me is the greatest achievement in life...

subinside -> RE: To love or be loved... (6/2/2007 6:34:54 PM)

i couldn't have said it better myself stella

sleazybutterfly -> RE: To love or be loved... (6/2/2007 6:36:34 PM)

I prefer knowing I am loved...and everything that brings with it.  I am just very blessed right now that I am with someone that not only loves me, but that I love very much in return.

simplyeli -> RE: To love or be loved... (6/2/2007 6:39:20 PM)

it has taken me 42 years to realize that in order for someone else to love me, i had to love myself. i have found that to respect, to honor, to be loyal to yourself is the most fulfilling and rewarding love there is. and it is of the utmost importance to feel this in order for any other kind of relationship to work. otherwise, vicious cycles begin and ripple out to other facets of life.

love yourself first, the rest will fall into place.

That tends to be my line of thought also.

To love.

Faramir -> RE: To love or be loved... (6/2/2007 6:57:02 PM)

I think this is one of those places where English, as wonderful a language as it is, isnt as helpful as a more rigorous language might be.  Presumably the OP meant έρως love, and certainly most of the replies seem to presume that as well.  I'm not sure it is useful to talk of έρως (erotic) love or φιλια (friendship) as either/or propositions.  I don't know how eros love can truly exist absent a return: infatuation, lust, or a desire to possess perhaps, but not true έρως .  Likewise, I have never known friendship love to exist in a one-sided or unrequited form--like έρως, φιλια seems to exist only in reciprocation.

Familiarity and charity love (στοργη and agapē) are a different story I think--those loves are often one-sided, and can thrive that way.  Charity love is almost be definition an example of loving instead of being loved.

I have been the beneficiary of charitable love many times in my life--better to love with charity, but blessed have I been to have received it.
