Okay, I don't like em "whipped" on the ends, but I hate thread-wrapping every time I get rope. Any third alternatives (okay, not counting burning the ends of nylon ropes)?

All you should want to know about the different types of rope can be found here:

http://www.mastersteelow.com/how_to_rope_basics.shtml

As suggested in the link; "Prevent unraveling by dipping, taping, burning or whipping the ends."

The link provided by Mercnbeth is your best bet for figuring out what way is best for you. Personally, I dip the ends in the liquid plastic stuff used to coat tool handles. The dip comes in colors, so you can mix and match..

I had a tube of silicon glue or goop lying around and used that.

Tape and dip methods work well and even better if you color code them as to length.

Blue tape 25ft
black Tape 50 ft
Yellow tape 10 ft

That way as you need spoecific lengths you can grab the onme you need easiliy.
