There are only two viable energy sources open to the United States--coal and nuclear. Get used to both.

What if we had gotten "used to" the horse and buggy as the only viable means of transportation? Don't put limits of the human mind.

We used horses and buggies alongside automobiles for about 60 years in many parts of the US. Energy is no different. I'd say we're about in the 1870s or 1880s of energy development--current technologies aren't meeting our needs, but there's nothing on the horizon for the next 50 years that will outright solve the problem. Till then, we have good, viable technology in the form of nuclear and various forms of advanced coal. Many environmentalists have a visceral reaction to these technologies and reject them out of hand. We're not supposed to use fossil fuels. We're not supposed to use nuclear fuel. Ethanol has been entirely discredited as a viable fuel source--it actually is less energy efficient and vastly more pollutive than gasoline! Luckily, a few environmentalists are starting to come to their senses and sign on to nuclear and coal.

The French (among others) certainly are supportive of their nuclear industry. They had an interesting story on them on 60 Minutes recently: "CBS) With power demands rising and concerns over global warming increasing, what the world needs now is an efficient means of producing large amounts of carbon free energy. One of the few available options is nuclear, a technology whose time seemed to come and go and may now be coming again. For the first time in decades, new nuclear plants are being built, and not just in Iran and North Korea. With zero green house gas emissions, the U.S. government, public utilities and even some environmental groups are taking a second look at nuclear power. And as correspondent Steve Kroft reports, one of the first the places they are looking is to France, where it has been a resounding success and the attitude is "Vive Les Nukes." http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/04/06/60minutes/main2655782.shtml That leads to a question: how many of us would be willing to have a nuclear facility in our backyard?
